we had this program at our high school called 'peer mediation', where students were selected by teachers then trained to resolve problems between students. If a student was being bullied and it was reported to the vice principal, the vice principal would call the bully into the office, do that whole intimidation thing, then recommend peer mediation where the bully and the other kid would go into a room with 3 "peer mediators" and you'd talk out the problems or issues. one peer mediator was with each student, then the third took notes... when everything was resolved, the students got sent back to class, the peer mediators sent in their little report, and everyone for the most part was happy because they weren't going to be punished and the situation ended right there.
i only know all this because a kid wrote a 3 page letter to our vice principal once saying i was bullying him and I had to goto it.
I talked to two of the 'peer mediators' afterwards and they told me our thing was extremely tame. usually it's two chicks who start going at it, but they also said the whole little system seemed to work really well and resolve a lot of problems.
...so i wasn't a bully at all and dunno how i ended up in there, but when i went back to class after our little session and everyone was asking me wtf i got yanked, i told them i was in peer mediation. they all naturally assumed as a good student i was a peer mediator, was kind of awkward explaining to the teacher how i was the one being mediated.
