So I just got a new laptop

i disagree. in fact, captain stagecoach, i know SEVERAL club owners who were under the impression that they could open their new clubs and NOT hire dj's.. save the money.. and play satellite radio.

they now ALL have dj's. dj's won't "cease to exist" in our lifetimes.

Satellite radio isn't the answer because people can't request shit. An actual computer onsite doing the mixing IS the answer. The programs aren't quite good enough yet, but they will be. Luckily, an aging hipster like yourself won't have to worry about it. :D

Isnt that called a jukebox?

are you TRYING to ruin my day???

but again.. i disagree. you're describing a jukebox that blends records.

forget it. too early for this discussion. leave it to say, IMO, clubs need to have a HUMAN rocking a crowd.

20 or 30 years from now? you're right, i'll be gone. thank god.. this crappy focking club you're describing with everyday joes choosing what music to play and a computer doing the transitions is not one i want to go to anyway.

love you buddy. no homo.

I want the 411 on what was done to your system with "cleaning". also, you still didn't give me the model number :(

harddrives need to be filled with porn.

a new laptop without porn is like , well an old laptop without porn.

so put some porn on it.

i don't think we did it entirely to be honest. we went thru and erased some programs that i'll never use. accounting, etc. like i said, only gonna use it for dj'ing. and man, i thought about you this morning as i left the house that i should stop and check.. alas.. i was running late and dipped out. my bad.

A schoolmate of mine "DJ's" for parties and weddings and stuff. Computer with mp3s + Mixing program to blend the songs together for better transitions is all he uses. Makes good money, too. And he has the advantage of doing requests as effortlessly as a conventional DJ with records in hand. Probably faster actually because he can Ctrl+F to find a song rather than thumb through vinyl or CDs.

tho i will "miss" thumbing thru vinyl (but not the accompanying chewed up cuticles), you have just described what serato does too. tho iono if it blends em. that's what I'M for. but yeah, song title, enter, and there you go.

i even know cats who have wifi, and if they don't have a requested song can DL it and have it ready in a couple minutes.

The jukebox at the brewery by my work does that. It is connected to broadband modem that sits on top and downloads the songs that someone popped a coin in for lol

Honestly, reading more, great that RAM now. like on your lunch break run and get it. seriously.

If I were you, this is what I would do.

1. Buy RAM chips from CC for $20 after rebate each (you need two sticks). Don't open them yet.

2. Buy this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8532885&type=product&id=1186008217237 On Sunday this is $399, no rebates.

3. Do the gig Saturday night with your current Gateway.

4. Sunday return the Gateway to CC, -15% restocking fee. Use your CC reciept for original laptop.

5. Go to Best Buy with the laptop reciept and pricematch.

For $399 + $97 + $40 (after rebates) you have a very nice machine that will be quite good for a while, whether you run Vista or XP.

my buddies a dj for weddings and what not on the side. does karaoke at some bar once a month too and makes a lot of extra money doing it. dj's will always have gigs, it'll just never be a full time job.

there are a handful who do it full time. obviously the radio guys, although many of them work full time as well. our biggest HH station here is wild 98 and the dj's (actual mixers, not on air jocks) make 25 bucks an hour. most of them probably get a 4 or 5 shifts a week, certainly not enough to pay the bills. where they DO make their money is working the clubs. the good ones make anywhere from 2 to 600 a night. only gotta work 2 or 3 nights a week to make a decent living.

the guys at the other station, The Beat, work for FREE. i know, i worked there for a year. the mixers make nothing. all have day jobs.

i personally make almost as much dj'ing as i do teaching. dunno what that says about the values of our society. this past weekend i worked a corporate xmas party friday night, an event at the forum sat morning, and a nightclub saturday night. made just under a month's take-home (net) pay in those 30 or so hours. don't know whether to be mad, or happy as hell. of course, dj's don't have much of a benefits package.

i DO know some dj's who eek out a living working club gigs mostly. personally, i'm too old for "eeking".

serato was 2 for 2 btw. no problems. little digital noise, but i think there's dust or something in the tone arm of one of my technics.
