Sabotage. As soon as you admin, pull the remote access logsSo, were having a minor dispute with our IT group (they seem to forget they work for us)
The company Im with farms out the IT stuff to a 3rd party company
They set up the servers, maintain the pcs yadda yadda
yadda
Problem is, they have the PCs locked down to stupid levels
Cant do anything without an admin password
Delete an icon off your desktop? Password
Install a small app for quick unit conversions? Password
Literally anything outside of normal file saving is locked the fuck out
And theyre non-responsive to help tickets, like if you need something itll be on an order of fucking weeks to even get them to acknowledge it.
So we (the engineering group specifically) are sick of this shit, presented our case to management to get our own admin account so we can do our fucking work. And they are ok with it.
Heres where it gets weird
The IT group, I think, is panicking for some reason, maybe because management will realize what a fucking joke they are, and theyre demanding we sign a waiver before agreeing to give us this account. Then, they sent a standard IT fear mongering email to the upper management to try and scare them out of doing this.
Now, here is my real question.
Suddenly, and for no "real" reason, the manager leading the charge to get us the admin account, his computer becomes infected with a "virus" that randomly opens a page of porn and an audio file plays saying something like "call this # in 24 hours to unlock this PC"
That was pretty easy to make go away, but how easy would it be for an IT guy to make that happen?
It popped up on the guy twice. Hes opened no email files that werent unknown, visited no sites that would be of question, and is not an idiot.
IT guy sabotage or just random bad luck?
I'm with domon, definitely sounds like sabotage. Now, here is my real question.

While lack of response to tickets are dumb, I don't blame them. More than likely, the volume of tickets for your group is going to go up quite a bit because even if you aren't, people are idiots. So, were having a minor dispute with our IT group (they seem to forget they work for us)

Nah, its all simple shit we need to do, install a printer, a new monitor, shit like that. They wont feel any impact. Theyre just being petty children over the whole thing. While lack of response to tickets are dumb, I don't blame them. No, it never mentioned bitcoin.edit: Wait, is the the bitcoin ransomware he got? Oh jesus if so.
Its a laptop, and the dudes out today, but Im not savvy enough to even know what to look for exactly.@Mustard Dispenser unplug that guys PC from the network before the evidence is deleted.

I know a lot of people hated it but I fucking loved the Sabotage scene in Star Trek Beyond[GIPHY="Beastie Boys Sabotage"]https://media3.giphy.com/media/pdw9KuTacG3gA/giphy.gif[/GIPHY]

It makes me feel old, because Sabotage really is classical music now. It's 20 years old.I know a lot of people hated it but I fucking loved the Sabotage scene in Star Trek Beyond
I get that. But it will take less than a week for someone to install iTunes. And then the Ask Toolbar. And then who knows what.Nah, its all simple shit we need to do, install a printer, a new monitor, shit like that. They wont feel any impact. Theyre just being petty children over the whole thing.
No, it never mentioned bitcoin.
None of that stuff seems crazy to me. I'm sure they can delete icons they've created, just not ones in the All Users Desktop folder. And no way does IT want end users installing programs, even if it's something quick and harmless. Sorry @Mustard Dispenser. There's a point where security overshadows usability and becomes pointless. You can secure a network without requiring such silly measures.

They're not worried about the things you guys need to do for your job. They're worried about all the other shit you'll do.
