For $500 you would have to add stuff to most of them. Latops need to come down more in price.

USED THINKPAD
My boss wouldn't be down with me buying "used" not that I object since my computer at home is used. He just wouldn't want me buying used products on the company card, dont ask me why. I tried buying something awhile back off ebay and he was opposed to it because the product was used.
40 gig hd and 512 ram?
Wouldnt that just be down grading?
it will primarily be used for work so I am looking for a work horse not a gaming rig.
did you even LOOK at the specs? no core duo, no dvd burner, smaller screen, 1/4 the ram, smaller drive, jeez dude
what the fuck do you need core duo for if it's going to be a work laptop? you don't. he already explained to us that he's running some ancient dailer program, it's not going to tax his system. 1/4 of the ram of a system 1/4 as reliable.
a thinkpad will last him a hell of a lot longer than that gateway or that toshiba.
when one is on a strict budget for work one should look for reliability, not unnecessary specs
the specs are clearly outclassed, period...you're telling him to buy something so old that it's being sold by IBM, not lenovo as well...gg
do you have a head to head comparison that a 3 year old IBM is going to be better than a new gateway? not bloody likely
in terms of reliability, yes. easy.
he doesn't need those uber specs, period
Thank you for ordering from Newegg.com. Please print this page for your records.
another thing, if he ever wants to go to vista down the road in a year or two, the thinkpad will not support it but the gateway already does right out of the box
yes, even when considerably older they are more durable than new specimens from other brands
