FYI Stop SOPA and punch GoDaddy in the cant

I've got a Dreamhost account. They're the kings of overselling. They seemed to grow too quickly and their network couldn't handle it. They've had several multiday outages or extreme lag/speed issues. I only use them now to host a couple of small web sites. I've been with Dreamhost for 5yrs on that account. I moved my business website to HawkHost (no relation, serious). They've built their business on top of Softlayer's network and servers. I've had only a brief outage due to a DDoS against their DNS servers (yes all 4 of them). Other than that, good prices. Not oversold. I've been with them for over a year now if I remember correctly. I've got my webhosting reseller account with them too.

One reason not to get a domain name and webhosting from the same company (this usually applies to the small guys) is if the small host goes out of business. They can hold your domain hostage in no-man-land where it is difficult to get the domain back in your control (think mix's webhosting if you're from [M]). That's why people often use separate companies for domain name registration, DNS, and webhosting.

Only one domain left to transfer out. Unfortunately, I had GoDaddy's privacy guard thing on because the domain name is offensive, and I no longer have control of the email address they have. Not sure how I'm going to move this one...

Is it the BLN one?

Change administrative contact e-mail address. Wait the ICANN enforced mandatory annoying 60 days. Transfer away from GoDaddy. Looks like that is your only option.

So if these ass-fucks in DC decide to ruin the internet, here’s how to access your favorite sites in the event of a DNS takedown

Here’s a tip for the do-it-yourself crowd: Go to your computer’s Start menu, and either go to “run” or just search for “cmd.” Open it up, and type in “ping [website address],”

Once you have the IP for a website, all you really need to do is enter it like you would a normal URL and hit enter/press go. Typing in “208.85.240.231” should bring you to the front page of AO3, for example, just as typing “174.121.194.34/dashboard” should bring you straight to your Tumblr dashboard. Since we’re obviously bracing for the worst case scenario which would involve you not being able to access the internet regularly, you should, save this list.

The thing with that IP list is that a portion of those sites use load balancing servers, Anycast distributed DNS systems, and/or CDNs. Thus the IP addresses change. So what might work today, might not work tomorrow, and not due to SOPA if that goes into effect.

Darn. I didn't think of that.

that type of thinking will be exactly how it gets circumvented though. the avg age of congress is 60. our parents shouldn't be governing the internet and they have no clue that it cannot be stopped.

without a geosynchronous orbit it's pretty much a piece of space debris. they'd have to launch a couple dozen for the idea to be worth a shit.

Spectrum space is controlled by governments as well. LOS satellite communication kek.

Doesn't even include the actual cost of the satellite which has to run a lot of equipment on relatively low power, radiation shielding, ground based staff 24/7, maintenance.
