FYI Stop SOPA and punch GoDaddy in the cant

I've been following this. Tempted to move my few dozen domains away from Godaddy. I have a few domains already with Name.com, who has a good coupon code STOPSOPA.

My friend knows the owner of Namecheap. Either of the registrars are legit in my book. May not be the cheapest game in town, but good customer service and clean interfaces on their websites.

edit: I don't think any congressman reads those form letters/e-mails. Take the time and write a letter or e-mail by hand in your own words.

You are writing to an intern/underpaid poly sci grad who works in their office and is stuck sorting mail. Go to their website see how they like to be contacted, some have different emails for legislation/requests/whatever. Send it to the correct email/address/office so the office staff doesn't have to work too hard sorting it out. Make it short, include your STREET ADDRESS, don't ramble.

Might do this late one night provided it's an automated procedure. But where to move to? I only pay $10/month for the hosting 4lulz is on. I could probably go a little bit higher, say up to $20/month, but I'm sure you pay more than that for UF right?

http://www.namecheap.com/web-hosting/web-hosting.aspx $7.45/mo for 100GB of disk space and "unlimited" bandwidth. I've also got a dreamhost account (that I don't use). They charge $9.95 for "unlimited" everything.

And moving your site wouldn't be automatic. Download, then upload, then import the database. But all the other transfer stuff is automatic.

Yeah, NameCheap's site is still a little more busy that I'd like, but omfg is it nice compared to GoDaddy.

(Of course they don't read them, but there is an intern somewhere that ups a counter for 'Against SOPA' when that email is received. Same thing with a physical letter or phone call.)

Yes I know this. A few years back, I was contracted to go up to Sen. Susan Collin's office in Bangor to change network settings on an old NT4 server in her office. Turns out the server didn't have the required ethernet network already installed (I think it had token ring only), so it couldn't be connected to the network. As I sat for an hour waiting for the dispatch office to figure out what I told them, I watched the interns field phone calls, cut out newspaper articles with the Sen.'s name mentioned, etc, then scan them into the computer to upload to the DC's office server. Boring job indeed.

Anyway... GoDaddy have withdrawn their support for SOPA. http://www.godaddy.com/newscenter/release-view.aspx?news_item_id=380

they were instrumental in the writing of the legislation and crafted it to exclude themselves. their withdrawal is like hitler saying "whoops, my bad" after the fact and expecting leniency.

Interesting. Although I doubt that means their exclusion goes away. Not to mention they helped craft the fucking thing.

Likely more of a PR stunt since they're leaking domains now.

They probably are legitimately dropping support for it, and purely because it's killing their business.
