I've got a Dreamhost account. They're the kings of overselling. They seemed to grow too quickly and their network couldn't handle it. They've had several multiday outages or extreme lag/speed issues. I only use them now to host a couple of small web sites. I've been with Dreamhost for 5yrs on that account. I moved my business website to HawkHost (no relation, serious). They've built their business on top of Softlayer's network and servers. I've had only a brief outage due to a DDoS against their DNS servers (yes all 4 of them). Other than that, good prices. Not oversold. I've been with them for over a year now if I remember correctly. I've got my webhosting reseller account with them too.
One reason not to get a domain name and webhosting from the same company (this usually applies to the small guys) is if the small host goes out of business. They can hold your domain hostage in no-man-land where it is difficult to get the domain back in your control (think mix's webhosting if you're from [M]). That's why people often use separate companies for domain name registration, DNS, and webhosting.
