Yes. Far too much focus on competition in today's society.
And here I thought everyone was getting participation ribbons

That's what I thought.
My parents have a VHS tape of me at a junior high talent show... I'm playing basic chords on a Peavey Raptor while a friend makes an ass of himself trying to sing CCR.So should we ban talent shows at schools?

My dad is fully capable of digitizing it and uploading it to youtube, and that scares the fuck out of me.
If the little fuckers can outrun a steamroller @ the age of 2, then they're special.

Fuck that noise. People who screwed up in class got their names put on the board and they witheld recess/lunch if there were names on the board. Those kids learned fast how to do their homework.
Punishment and public shaming is not an effective tool of teaching.

Punishment is important otherwise I would have never turned out as a productive member of society.
I am not with you on punishment at all. Do kids not have consequences for things they do? So if my kid (who is in Kindergarten) talks too much (which he does) he's just allowed to get away with it instead of having extra homework to do since he couldn't get it done in class?
Or if a kid is being a class clown you just ignore them instead of removing them from the location/group they are distracting? I hear what our son's teacher does and it is effective and it is seen by the children as "punishments" or "getting in trouble"
Punishments don't have to be "cruel"
Not sure I would consider name on the board public shaming either. Then again I went to Catholic Schools and they aren't always nice there so it didn't feel that bad to me either
!!!!
It was tap dance (see shoes), not a pageant!
Oh gawd, you're right.Damn, you managed to find a loophole in record time.
Come to le tap competition featuring the swimsuit tap and the evening dress tap.
I think people need to define what they think punishment is, because to say punishment doesn't work is a huge statement since punishment is used is almost every facet of life.
That's cool. You could believe 2+2=5, doesn't mean it is. What I said has been empirically proven.
There are better teaching techniques, and better behavior molding techniques than punishment.
Public shaming can work, but the variables necessary for that are usually lacking, so overall it is ineffective.
Class starts in 5, might be able to continue
