Baby France Bans Child Beauty Pagents

So should we ban talent shows at schools?
My parents have a VHS tape of me at a junior high talent show... I'm playing basic chords on a Peavey Raptor while a friend makes an ass of himself trying to sing CCR.

My dad is fully capable of digitizing it and uploading it to youtube, and that scares the fuck out of me.

Now that's an argument I can get behind. I will admit that there is one dance we did in middle school that I would die if someone found to upload. I have been recorded singing as well but at least those weren't awful.

If the little fuckers can outrun a steamroller @ the age of 2, then they're special.

I picture you as Damon Killian, The host of the game show in the movie The Running Man, when saying that.

Richard Dawson from The Family Feud. Most Americans knew him from that. He was also Newkirk in Hogan's Heroes. Loved that show as a kid.

Yes. Far too much focus on competition in today's society.
...LETS GIVE EVERYONE PARTICIPATION AWARDS

Fuck that noise. People who screwed up in class got their names put on the board and they witheld recess/lunch if there were names on the board. Those kids learned fast how to do their homework.

Punishment and public shaming is not an effective tool of teaching.

I am not with you on punishment at all. Do kids not have consequences for things they do? So if my kid (who is in Kindergarten) talks too much (which he does) he's just allowed to get away with it instead of having extra homework to do since he couldn't get it done in class?

Or if a kid is being a class clown you just ignore them instead of removing them from the location/group they are distracting? I hear what our son's teacher does and it is effective and it is seen by the children as "punishments" or "getting in trouble"

Punishments don't have to be "cruel"

Not sure I would consider name on the board public shaming either. Then again I went to Catholic Schools and they aren't always nice there so it didn't feel that bad to me either ;)

Yeah no.

That's cool. You could believe 2+2=5, doesn't mean it is. What I said has been empirically proven.
There are better teaching techniques, and better behavior molding techniques than punishment.
Public shaming can work, but the variables necessary for that are usually lacking, so overall it is ineffective.

Class starts in 5, might be able to continue

I think people need to define what they think punishment is, because to say punishment doesn't work is a huge statement since punishment is used is almost every facet of life.

Punishment - an unfavorable stimuli following an unwanted event or behavior.
Positive Punishment is adding an unfavorable stimuli, such as your hand to their ass
Negative Punishment is removing something that the individual enjoys, such as recess.

Reinforcement works better than punishment. It is easier to implement and more forgiving.

Yes because one method always works on all children - yes I'm being just as condescending sounding as your post was ;)

I think you do need to define punishment though, because to my child going to the back of a line while talking too much is punishment while others might view it as consequence. Same thing in my mind really.
