Median Home Price in Detroit = $7,500

I actually pretty much read the article, but the reason why your country is seen as way more violent than the UK is because tons of people are murdered in the US compared to the UK. Fuck violent crime statistics, it depends on what you mean as violent, how eager people are to report crimes, how many are false claims etc. etc. etc. I'd like to see some stats for homicide.

And I dunno how reliable these stats are, they are slightly different time frames but:

In the UK (population c. 60.5m) there were 765 reported incidents of murder for 2005-6 (Home Office, undated) - a rate of about 1.1 per 100,000.

In the US (population c. 298.5m) there were an estimated 16,137 homicides in 2004 (FBI, 2006a) - a rate of about 5.4 per 100,000. Of these, 10,654 were carried out with guns (FBI, 2006b).

LOL, you can't just move the target!

I understand that you FEEL safer there, because logic and our reputation says that you should be safer there. However, perception isn't reality.

I know that I feel safe because I'm used to here. I also feel safe because everyone doesnt have guns at their disposal. I just don't agree with guns, I don't like anything about them. That might he weird for 99% of people, but it's just how I feel.

Its completely understandable. However, you could logically suggest that our crime rate is lower due to guns. BTW, i used these calculations here:

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs08/hosb0708chap3.pdf

http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm

And you chances of being a victim of a violent crime there for 2007/2008 was 3.2%. 2007 is the most recent numbers listed for the US and the chance was .46%.

Just look at Vermont, lowest violent crime in the country IIRC, no bs beyond the federal rigamarole to jump through for gun ownership, and concealed carry requires no license.

Yeah you could get a house there for 7.5k but you probably have to commute 200 miles to get a decent job.

They are likely referring to the number of "dwellings" (because I wouldn't go as far as to say they are proper houses with the state they're probably in), that are abandoned. The income that is generated is more than likely offset by the amount of repair/maintenance that is needed to make the place habitable.

Since the prices are that low, they probably aren't meant to be residential anyhow. More than likely you'll roll up to a piece of shit that is boarded up and falling down.

there are only two people per sq mile there though...hard to have many injurious conflicts that way :p

You would be very VERY surprised.

$2000

in related news, concealed permit requests are up 900%. people are preparing for anarchy.

but MEDIAN? so if there's a FREE house there (read about one in the berg yest that nobody wants, LOL) then the TOP price is 14K? :waw:

respect to you Onno for ridin for your city. it's hard to do sometimes, but home is home.
you're thinking of mode.

median means half of the houses that sold are cheaper, and half are more expensive, but it doesn't say anything about by how much.

Man, if there wasn't snow and cold there, I'd be tempted into looking more into that state.
