Ontopic The new car-seching thread

Agreed. No idea, just reporting what I saw on the interwebs. It looks a bit nutz. But not entirely. Get rid of races with ball bearings and playing games with fluid that way. Use a bunch of solenoid-controlled valves.

What is this shiite? Everybody selling these 6 packs. Is there a maintenance schedule - 2 a year?

The solenoids on the valve body are intriguing.
yeah, that's for a traditional 4 speed autotragic.

The subaru CVT is like the old DoAll (IIRC) band saw "gearbox" where the effective gear ratio is dictated by how close the pulley sheaves are together on the input and output shafts

edit: pulleys are on either side of the metal chain.

And it seems that the VAG cable I got doesn't support FreeSSM in my model car. I was hoping that I would be able access TCM codes myself on the cheap, but no such luck. Apparently I need a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0, which is $100. :(

This is why 90s cars are peak wrenchers; mostly modern systems without all the electronic devilry.

I’d like some feedback please.

If you were a new driver (but an adult) and had $11K cash to spend on a used car, what would you look for?

Must be an automatic. Other pluses include a hatchback or room for some stuff, and maybe AWD.

The Corolla is one we’ve been looking at for sure. So far Kia Souls have been the strongest contender (surprisingly reliable) and I’ve been pushing Scion xB and Honda CR-Vs and Civics.
Kias are pretty capable for their lineage, though I tend to overlook them ever since they became a leasing company for 19 y/o who want their big V8 sedans.

You can't go wrong with any of those, it'll just come down to personal preference, IMO.
