statins are for when exercise and diet dont work.
Yeah, sure. Over prescribing could never happen in this country.

EXACTLY. But, the "creepfactor" here is that it's becoming so normal. Everyone that hears about the flu in my household, (oldest had it, now youngest is hit with it today): "Omg, go to the ER." Like, WTF? REALLY?? He's not dying!! He's not lethargic. He's not an infant! I'm taking care of him, ffs!
It doesn't matter wtf it is, people run straight to docs for magic pills.

well, you made it sound like you thought they served no purpose at all and were only for lazy people who couldn't be bothered to try the hard way first.
while it may be overprescribed, and that is a problem, it does have beneficial effects for those who HAVE tried the hard way and didn't improve, which is what domon was talking about. For those people, the statement that they're no more effective than a change in diet/exercise isn't true.
I should start an anti-ambulance. That picks up all the people that go to the ER for retarded shit, and drops them in the middle of the woods and tells them to man up.
Oh and then there are drugs like the statins, prescribed to reduce cholesterol. Shown to be no more effective at reducing it than walking a couple times a week and eating some fish. Oh, and a helluva lot more dangerous.
God forbid you accept a possible alternate theory. IIRC, he quoted studies just like you did, genius.
IIRC, cholesterol is your body's way of responding to a stressor.statins are for when exercise and diet dont work. There are genetic factors for cholesterol that cant be overcome unfortunately.
It's the stress level. My wife also has this problem; adding yoga into her routine lowered her overall cholesterol level by several points.Source: my dad. Besides ridiculously massively high stress levels, he's the healthiest dude alive in terms of diet and activity. He's never sat still a day in his life, and theres no soda/chips/cookies/etc in his diet. Everything comes out of the garden.
His BP is still 210/125 and his cholesterol is through the roof. I dont know how he isnt dead yet Its so high that he randomly has blood vessels in his eyes burst.
This. Except modern medicine tries to have a one size fits all approach. You can do everything you're supposed to do and still need the meds. Genetics plays a big role in it. There is no universal solution for that works for everyone.

I hope your dad is OK.
You must have missed the part where in 5 years (2008-2013) the field of genetics has moved on vastly, how up to date do you think, this being the case, that work from the 1970's is? I didn't bother reading the whole of the selfish gene, but compared to the work I am currently typing up it's....not even comparable.
We need a polo up in here.
Is he just a worrier or something else?yeah, i know it is :/ Thats never gonna change though, its who he is, no matter the circumstance, he'll always find something to stress about, its not like its tied to any one thing that could be cut out.
Thanks though man, somehow he's maintained those ridiculously high levels for almost 40 years and it hasnt killed him yet.
edit: maybe longer, didnt know him when he was young
Is he just a worrier or something else?
Like young before you were born, or like young because you met him as an adult?
hahahahahahaahhha You spout drivel as if you've actually conducted primary research hahahahahaahahaha
I know some people like that. That's a tough one to overcome. Before i was born. Sorry, that was unclear.
Just a worrier, everything is a problem. If it snows, its going to be the apocolypse and the power is going to go out and all the food is going to be ruined and it will be awful and terrible and awful and he just cant take it and its terrible. If he leaves the house for long, the stove will burn wrong and light a fire or the furnace will go out and the pipes will freeze or something something something
Its not to the point of mental illness or anything, but everything is always the absolute worst case scenario in his head.
