Like The Corner. Which if you haven't watched you should. And the wire was pretty real, as all David Simons shows are (minus the deuce) considering he spent significant time with the people involved in real life shit in order to create and write the show.

The books co authored with I can't remember who, the last name Price rings a bell, are excellent.
