I’m all for term limits of some kind but I don’t think anyone is going to be really good at government unless they spend a little time there. New congresspersons are always shocked to learn that half their days will be spent on a phone raising money. They even have a telemarketing center for them to work out of.
If we start implementing term limits and insisting on lower pay for politicians, it will become an undesirable position, no matter how strong the feeling of doing a civic duty is. We’d be better off trying to get money out of politics.
The 2020 campaigning has already started. Jeez.
People have been saying get the money out of politics for as long as there's been a such thing as money and politics. I just don't see it happening. Best we can do is limit the pigs time at the trough.
You are absolutely spot on about fundraising. I've actually talked to ex-politicians and regardless of party or philosophy the honest ones will all tell you the same thing. Once you get there whatever you campaigned on doesn't matter anymore. The higher-up basically say you raise this much money for the party and you vote this way on these items or you don't get funding for your reelection.
Strict term limits would eliminate those "senior members" and let average Joe congressman promote his ideas without that consequence.
Hell, I just read some news article the other day talking about some congressman that died who'd been in office for 60 fucking years. That's insane. That guy's never done anything but suck tit and beg for money and they were extolling him as some great "servant of the public".
It's pure stupidity.
