the toast is to soak up the sauce (grease)
when you buy ribs in the ghetto they give you like half a loaf of generic white bread and no butter.

I had a guy who once a year did a huge Fry Day party every year. It would literally just be huge vats of oil and people were encouraged to bring random shit to deep fry.
