But JD is Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon.

IMO, it has to be made in Kentucky to be real bourbon. I'll concede, the definition doesn't require it.
Dude, it a bourbon that they call a Whiskey to be trendy. Don't fall for their marketing gimmicks.
 
You have to use a new white oak barrel, char it, then age the bourbon in it. Those barrels are then sold to other companies for aging whiskey, scotch, etc. and used several times over but in order to be bourbon, it must start with a brand new white oak barrel.
