Ontopic Should an HIV infection be classified as a disability in the eyes of the feds?

polio was a major scare anyone could easily get... up through the 50s. so yea, everyone was all over attacking that, march of dimes was created, private money was raised, and they paid for the research that found the cure.

aids is something you had to have gay sex or a bad blood transfusion or share drug needles to get up until the mid 90s or later.... even now it's something you get through pleasure (drugs or sex) in the US. in case you haven't noticed, nobody really gives a shit about africa or what happens there... not even african americans. we'll step into libya's cause a few weeks in, civil wars and uprisings against outright slavery in africa has been going on for a long ass time and..... we fund it by buying engagement rings.

well dbzeag is comparing polio to aids, and trying to pump up his aids figures using africa.

its simply another one of those issues that although might have a huge impact on him or his buddies, doesn't really effect the majority of the population. polio effected a large majority of the population... maybe not directly with infections, but people were afraid to go out and do things for fear of contracting polio.

ironically, back when HIV funding was at the forefront (and the straight population), people were under the impression they could get it from sharing the same water fountain as someone with aids or similar ridiculous notions... soon as that fear went away, bam. nobody cared anymore.

So when AIDS goes airborne, then we'll panic.

I promise not to shake your hand. It will be safer that way.

absolutely not.

are you aware of the 'pozzing' subset? it seems specifically to get on benefits.

HIV/AIDS is a serious infection, with serious consequences for public health. However, the championing of this cause as some sort of gay lifestyle has to end. I'd hazard a guess that more gays die from Cancer-related illness daily than do from HIV/AIDS. Why not try and raise awareness out of that?

An interesting article about gift giving and bug chasing if you are interested.

diabetes definitely shouldn't be a disability. neither should HIV, obesity, etc.

the overwhelming majority of HIV cases in the US are self conflicted or participating in an act where you know its a consequence... same with obesity, for every 1000 fat people probably 1 have a legitimate thyroid problem... the other 999 only have a thyroid problem cause they eat way to damn much. i know quite a few people with diabetes whose work it doesn't effect, i'm sure there are some extreme cases, but most people live with it fine and control it with insulin and diet.

really, if its your own fault you got something (fat, full blown aids, etc.) or something you could easily work with (diabetes... most bi-polar cases if properly medicated), then it shouldn't be considered disability.

especially since HIV is just the infection. you could make a lot better argument for full blown aids where the immune system is simply shot and they shouldn't be around people...

a diabetic without insulin could easily be dead inside 24 hours. I'd consider death pretty disabling :p

yea, they better stay at home all day and make sure they have insulin around. no way they'd be able to test for that at work or wear an automatic pump or carry around an insulin shot...
