Anyone had experience with losing weight?

I'm not. The idea that more water will automatically makes you lose weight is an old wives tale. More water will only help you lose weight if you're chronically dehydrated, in which case it flushes salt from your system and rebalances your body's water weight load or if you take on increased metabolic activity. If you just sit around and drink more water that your body doesn't need, you're only flushing your kidneys for no good reason.
yeah, but this isn't perfect lab world where everyone has exacting diet standards and is properly hydrated to begin with. in the real world, if you drink more water it makes you lose weight. whether that's because you're replacing coke as a thirst quencher, or no longer mistaking being thirsty for being hungry doesn't matter. the result is as originally stated: if you drink a lot of water, you lose weight.

from what I understand, it also flushes fat though.

It's not a wive's tale. It's just not as huge a factor as people give it credit.

Drinking water prior to eating will make you feel full faster.
Drinking cold water will cause your body to metabolize more to generate heat. Albeit we're talking about 2 extra calories a day, but it's still there, so technically they're not lying.

I was once told that a body's reaction to thirst is similar to that of hunger, so if a person is thirsty, they'll think they're hungry and eat. If you drink enough water that you're properly hydrated, you won't get the thirst signal and think you're hungry and grab snack food.

Or something.

I dunno. I lost a bunch of weight last year, and gained about 2/3 of it back again. Losing weight and being healthy isn't difficult if you've got discipline and motivation.

Here's my thread from genmay:

So, I read DM's thread about getting into shape and it really hit home. Knowing what's right yet doing the exact opposite, making excuses along the way: Oh, I don't have time to eat right, so I get fast food. I work a desk job with long hours, so I can't work out. I could get back into shape if I wanted, but what's the point?

And then I realized, I missed being able to do the things I did when I was in shape and there really was no reason to be fat or stay fat. So, about a month ago, I started to change the way I ate. The way I woke up and went to sleep and the way I worked out.

Just a bit of history, I suppose. When I first started posting on genmay oh so long ago, I worked in a field that required physical fitness and mental acuity.

At such time, I looked like this. 195lbs:

During that time, I was transitioning away from such physical work and wanted to get into a job doing computers. DM actually got me my first real tech job, so I moved to LA. I was still fit, and worked out a little bit but began to slip. 215lbs:

After a year, I had gained about 60lbs, my breating was heavy and the asthma had come back. I used an inhaler at least 2-5 times a day. Knee and back problems, etc. 260lbs.

I started lifting at the gym and lost about 10lbs, but I kept hovering at the 250lb level.
Maybe about 6 months ago. 250lbs:

2 months ago, still 250lbs, but maybe a bit more muscle than last time.

After reading DM's post and talking with him a bit, I realized that I had the time, the experience, willpower, etc to get back into shape if I really wanted to. So, for the past month I have been eating right, training MMA and lifting at the gym. In the past 4 weeks, I have dropped 30lbs while maintaining strength (got a little stronger, even). I haven't had to use my inhaler in the past three weeks.

So, I guess this is my accountability thread. Questions?

And then since that thread in April:

I'm about to walk down this trail hardcore.. God help me.

So, backstory. July, I decided that enough was enough, and just quit smoking. No patch, no gum, no meds, no nothing. July 2nd was the day. I haven't had one since. I was a pack a day smoker up until then, and I hated myself for it.

Then, the beginning of this month, I tested myself again. I wanted to see if I could quit drinking for 30 days. It's not like I have an alcohol problem, I only drank once a week at most, but it was a heavy binge when I did, about $150 worth of alcohol at a crack, and lots of bad decisions made. I also couldn't think of a time when I went 30 days without a drink. Needless to say, I've been out with my friends to a bar 5 times this month, and still haven't had so much as a sip. My willpower lately has been impressing the shit out of me.

With my willpower actually seeming to be in a working state again, I think it's time to take it to the next level.

I'm currently at 232 (as you can pretty much see here below).

We're going to call this the before photo.

I've got until December 31st to drop down 37 lbs. My goal, before the year is out, is to hit 195. Something I haven't seen in like 6 years.

I'm hoping the willpower will keep me kickin.

good job with the quitting and quitting. i stopped smoking June 2nd. My all time record is four months. Going to try to break it in another week and a half.

I'm trying weight loss second. The drinking cessation will have to wait.

way to go!!!!  you are very handsome!!! :hi2u:

it's really just re-establishing a way of life, right? it's a mentality...reestablishing new habits that eventually you don't have to think about. now train yourself to like a non-alcoholic drink at the bar so when you go out one night and you're stressed, you already have a comfort drink to turn to.
it's so easy to let one bad day mess up all your good ones.

(for the record, i think you're a GREAT size.)

Yeah, fly and I aren't big drinkers so you can catch us with a red bull sometimes.

...but we'll get down on one knee for a Newcastle.

Yeah, fly and I aren't big on normal sex so you can catch us with a red bull sometimes.

fixt for accuracy

on a side note, I looked up the prescriptions I am taking to see about their side effects. Yeah, so all of them can cause weight loss. Zantac, Voltair, Adderall and Ambien.. Thanks doc.
