Neat Religion Tidbits

Well, on that note if I were Buddhist in the purest sense it wouldn't be cheating because we wouldn't be together. Being together implies attachment.

I also dig the Hindus, they believe all gods are their gods, so as long as you believe in god, any god, you are Hindu.

I don't really think that's what Buddha meant when talking about attachment.

I may go for a religious studies minor and I happen to come from a solidly religious background but I find it interesting to study, additionally. because religion is such an interesting component to American society and throughout history yadda yadda yadda :D

I thought that is what you were doing? It's changed like 10 times :p

You agreed with Sarcasmo's post. Which is likely a better demonstration of my point than anything I could say; though you likely only glossed it. That and you posted this thread. This is shit anyone could tell ya.

Your obvious tone with this is that you are enlightened because you only think things that are true. Which is common with atheist, fly for example. You don't actually know these things though, you take them on faith. Which Sarcasmo illustrated beautifully.

"I believe in..." That isnt a statement of knowledge, it's a statement of faith. You've reduced science to a religion; which makes it no different than any other religion. 100 years ago that would've included a "belief" in cubical atoms, among other things.

Hippasus was drowned because he brought up the idea of irrational numbers when it was commonly accepted that all things were absolute.

Just because something is in fashion, or popularly accepted doesnt make it any more true than something that doesnt fit your idea of how things should be.

*spins*

I still hate Buddhists for the record.

For the somewhat uninformed, science is faith, yes. However, there is empirical data that I know I can review and thereby become informed. There is no empirical data for religion.

All science assumes something to reach such empirical conclusions. Assumption is belief.

Empirical evidence is just a fancy method of saying "observable and repeatable" evidence of something. An observation is perception; always. You are assuming that your [or anyone elses] perception is reliable. So, you are taking your perception on faith. Which rather defeats empiricism, since it is only a consensus of the observation of something by people who are also taking their perception on faith.

I could just leave it at that and hope you sort out the point but no one here ever does so:

You are applying the observation of your perception (which cannot proved to be truth, as above) as an absolute truth against something which you simply havent perceived.
