Ontopic The new car-seching thread

So yesterday was a butt.

Drive over was nice.

Had to get weird to get everything to line up. Still not sure why it was such an asspain to get it all in position. Maybe I need to redesign my motor mounts again? Dunno.

There was much pondering, much crawling in and around everything.

But she's finally where she'll sit. Going to need to go back and hook up the radiator and put the upper intake on and then I can start her.
I badly need to do a nut-bolt check of everything on it. Found two random ass bolts loose on two different cross members. I guess they just start to get loose after almost 400k? :iono:

also, almost that exact test is what got Project Farm famous

I will buy fuckin' anything that dude recommends. he's the best.

Friend bought one of those induction bolt busters. Haven't borrowed it but anecdotally the thing's amazing.

if something stuck i generally just skip all the other steps (breaker bar, penetrating oil, etc) and jump straight to a butane torch. Not very hot in the grand scheme of things, but hot enough to free a whole lotta things up

My new car.
1985 Volvo.

Got it with a fresh rebuilt long block, tranny, and a new clutch between them.

Rest of the shit is in the back.

I like puzzles do you like puzzles I like puzzles.

My favorite part is this cardboard box that has "volbolto" written on it.
It's all the nuts and bolts, all laying loose, in one box, like you took them all, spun them in one of those lottery number tumbler things, then dumped them all out into one box.

Does it run yet? Does it make a screaming sound like "dude I was dead... why did you re-animate me with gunk brand fluids?"
Not yet, but I'm off 4 days next week so with any luck it'll be spinning then.

Went to the junkyard today. Didn't need any parts for it, just took a lot of pictures and made notes on one that was mostly all put together.

Came with a Chilton's manual but it's still easier seeing one put together as far as things like routing vacuum lines and wiring and stuff so it reaches where it needs to go but stays clear of heat sources, spinning parts, etc.
Also stuff like put this on before you put that on or it'll be a bitch to reach, etc.

Thing has all the parts, and extras of some of them, sitting new in the box. All the gaskets. Seems like it's all there, including title and keys. Or if something is missing it's gotta be just some minor odd or end.

Junkyard has some 91's and 92's that look the same as that one if needed.

Exhaust and rear suspension is already new parts on it. Dude just lost interest and/or moved somewhere else, couldn't take all his projects with him, and this one got culled from the herd.

Looks like he knows what he's doing. Work that has been done seems to be done right from what I can tell. No rigging shit up "good enough". Most the new parts are Volvo OEM or the few that aren't are something quality, etc.

Fer real dude, the Volvo red block is well sought after and can generally be built to handle a lot of boost and HP. If that one is solid, and if it was owned by someone that had been building it as a project, it might be setup for some decent fun.

Oh, it was also kinda not really but sorta free so there's that.

The guy who had it passed it off to one of the old lady's sons friends, who passed it on to her son, who happens to be indebted to me for a not unsubstantial amount of cash I pretty much figure I'll never see come my way, so got the car as a way of chipping away at the debt.

I knocked off book value for a junker in pieces for now, then after it's been on the road for a little bit and seems like it's gonna be a good reliable car I'll knock off book value for one that's in excellent condition.

Also I get to use his buddies shop to draw up and weld up a roof rack that can handle the canoe, extension ladders, long lumber, heavy stuff, etc. so can at least have an almost-truck.

I'd try and see what has been done to it, if possible. Minimum pop off the valve cover and look at the cam, if its brand new, or if you can find the part numbers I'd look 'em up. Snake a borescope down into the cylinders, see if the pistons look like flat tops, dished, basically stock or not.

If its built, you'll never get it running right with any stock parts so you'll have to figure that out to get it to run right. If it was a stock rebuild it'll be fine with regular induction and exhaust

Ya I somewhat found that out doing some reading an research on it. Turns out there's a whole sort of enthusiast community around Volvo red blocks I didn't know about.

There's a couple turbochargers in that stuff as well as all new lines, hoses, etc. and a controller.

Figured I'd play with that down the road as immediate needs are just functionality and reliability but need to get some info from the guy and/or take a peek in the top and bottom end before I get too much more together.

I'd read some of the ones designed for turbo used dished pistons. Lower compression and would be kinda weak just running it normally aspirated.

Not sure how sturdy the build parts are but from what I can tell the guys intensions were it has to be built for at least some boost. Probably more than I'd really need but can't get too far ahead of myself here.

Valve cover is just sitting on there not bolted down. Getting whatever cam and valve info I can easy enough.

Also gonna pull the oil pan just because I don't know if the oil pump was ever primed or probably been sitting long enough needs to be done again anyway so can find out whatever I can from that end as well.

As well as just checking torque on bolts, etc. because again this thing is somewhat of a mystery/puzzle.

The sons friend it passed through on the way to me is a friend of the whole family, one of her "spare kids" they all grew up with. He'll help get whatever info there is, still has the guys contact info and is on good terms with him.

My tinkering so far hasn't been much engine hard part related. Got the cross member under the back of the tranny so things are mounted and sitting like they will. Got fresh gear oil and gasket in the differential. Replaced a frayed section of wiring harness and got new connectors on the ends.
Sorted through the "volbolto" box and got bolts somewhat sorted by size, type, grade, or just seemed like they go together, etc.

Lot of looking stuff up and reading. Taking a junkyard trip just to document things on one that was put together, etc.
Taking my time, learning about it, not just slapping shit together.
