I told my husband the story and he got really unsettled.

He said I should have raised my voice (so as to alert other people in the lot that something might be amiss)

But, I have a teeny voice. I have a small SUV but it's still taller than me especially with the trunk open. So unless you were in the same aisle as me, who could really tell I was there? Maybe the trunk being open is a clue.

Ultimately though, I thought that yelling/aggressively say no might have made the situation worse?

Idk. It was weird.

Telling her to go sit in the car like a good little girl is a compliment? And Jesus man, he doesn't get points because he didn't grab her. wtf is wrong with you?

You're out of your mind. I've helped people load and unload shit plenty of times. Not once did I do it after they declined my offer. If you don't understand that, I wonder how many times you've creeped women out.

You're so hot to me right now.

Ya I bet... reading it made my hackles go up. There are polite people and there are not-so-polite people masquerading as polite people.

Huh?

My statement has to do with what can happen if anyone walks up to anyone else ever which is why I opened with "Ok, so outside of the salt"

Again, certainly someone can say no thanks. No biggie. Life goes on.

You "helped people load and unload shit plenty of times," right? Because it's a decent, humane thing to do. But additionally, YOU
could have grabbed her ass? Stolen her car? Grabbed her purse? Stolen the salt*stuff*? Pulled a knife? Point is, [ YOU ] had [ THEM ] pretty much trapped in that situation. Not flirty.
Right?

I don't believe the people who get help are thinking as someone walks up to them 'Yup. I'm vulnerable to ass grabbing, losing my car or purse, getting a knife pulled on me, and am trapped.'

You're still here trying to move the goalposts away from your unsympathetic initial response that even made the men here feel squicky?

Just move on.

Goalposts aren't moving.

Just pointing out that I'm not worried (nor do I think anyone else should be worried) about someone else's negative over-generalizations about someone simply walking up to someone else.

The guy found her attractive. He maybe wasn't the smoothest communicator but that's what this is all about.

It's not unreasonable to assume some woman loading a bunch of heavy salt bags by herself might be single either, otherwise her man would be doing that shit.

"Are you married?" is the same as asking "are you available?". Upon hearing the answer he said the husband was a lucky guy. That's not an uncommon response at all. It's also a compliment.

Needing 2 refusals could be seen as being a little pushy but it's not like he had her blocked in with his windowless van.

The whole thing was probably awkward for the guy too because she is hot. He probably thought to himself later, "man, I bet I looked ridiculous. Could've handled that better".

Ok, so outside of the salt, this could happen to any woman at any time she's near her car.

& outside of the purse it could happen to anyone at any time.

& the 'pulled a knife' scenario: couldn't some well meaning person go up and offer help and, just as equally, get a knife or gun pulled on them?

If you replaced all the gender neutral language for the person being assaulted for female pronouns, you'd sound like you actually understand some of the shit women have to worry about

No one doubts you're not worried. You've made it abundantly clear multiple times that you're a misogynist.

I'd offer to help any stranger who's gotta load 400 pounds of salt into their car, because that's shitty work.

Though the conversation would be like "that looks shitty, want a hand with that?", not whatever creepy old man bullshit happened there. And when they say "no thanks", I'd say "ok, have a good day" and walk away... thinking to myself I'm glad they said no, because that's shitty work.
It's my least favorite chore. Plus the farmer carries to bring all that salt into the house. Yay!

To be fair, initially I wasn't bothered at all, I was laughing internally because if I ever get hit on it's usually someone who is also a minority (how can they tellllll?? Lol)

But when I said I didn't need help and he kept approaching me, that's when my internal dialog went 'wtf dude'
