Box currently has a 4th gen i3, but it's as old as a 4th gen i3, (q2 of '13), and it's about due for an upgrade. Was thinking Ryzen, but I also don't want to fuck around with immature firmware.

aint nothing immature about ryzen bytecode. Its 4 gens in at this point.

All depends what you wanna do with it. Your big cost is actually gonna be the RAM upgrade to DDR4.

For the last week, I've found my laptop is a lot slower than usual. Wasn't sure if it was from the whole spectre/meltdown patches or whatever... just found out it has a bad SODIMM. It's supposed to have 12GB of RAM (4GB onboard, 8gb SODIMM), but only shows 4GB.

Laptop doesn't even see the 8GB stick, or report any errors or anything on boot. Swapping in a 4GB SODIMM and it's up to 8GB again.

Weird.
