I love the Uscan lanes - we have them here where you can do ANY size order, none of that 12-15 or less shit.
a.I slide everything gently down toward the bags in roughly the order I want to bag the pricks, so my food isn't crushed before i want it to be.
b. More of a.

Parts of some stores have actually gone the other direction, and hired shoppers to prepare your order and bring it to your car.

That is until we're all forced to shop via Google voice recognition and have it delivered by drone via GPS ping you can't opt out of.
Move around via hand gestures, make yourself the only shopper, no wait times, & automated delivery.

Actual "Store" Inventory? Zero. Produce can arrive from one place, meats come from somewhere else, dry goods in whatever big box it fits in nearby.

I realize a lot of truths are being pointed out to me today. I have to ask though, with all the future automation displacing people, what are they going to do?

Automation is one of the reasons there are fewer jobs that were formerly “livable wage” and held by the middle class. The only people who benefit from automation and outsourcing are the people at the top and stockholders.

The displaced people then end up at McDonalds, and even McD’s is increasingly automated.

It’s an honest question. What do these people do for a living? Even wage levels in manufacturing hinge on current minimum wage, and now those types of jobs aren’t “livable”, even though many of them were 40 years ago.

Is the lower birth rate helpful?
I think it could be - not everything will be automated for a very long time. But realistically, it will just be a smaller group to keep crushed down. The truly rich will be glad to have fewer lower level humans to deal with. Humans suck (snark). A robot would probably never bang your spouse, steal your silverware or drive your car while you are out of town. Do your part - smash a computer in the face today.

Lords, peasants, and environmental destruction.

We're already on that path now.

iirc, they did something like this for a pharmacy. All automated. Mistakes=0. Not to your car, but the pharmacy didn't put your prescription(s) together by hand.
High percentage of prescription are filled that way everywhere now. Pharmacies keep those bottles back there for looks.
Hospitals love the machines - stops most pill pilfering.

I use the U Scan thing every time, but there is still a human there. For now.

There's 1 human watching like 4 to 6 machines in case somebody has a problem. That used to be 4 to 6 checkout girls.

Your use of the Uscan is contributing to a 75% to 83% job loss in your own community. These are your own neighbors mouths you're taking food out of. I hope you're happy with yourself.

I’m sure it’s one of the contributors to my feeling of self-worth.

The cost won't plummet, because the supply will contract as various colleges merge or disappear. It'll just be the elite that can get degrees.

Then we'll have a bimodal distribution - factory jobs for the proles and management jobs for the elites.
If only less than 1% of the population can get a degree, then degrees won't mean shit any more.

You would probably see industries create their own specialised training to give people the skills to work in their industry.

It won't be 1%, but it'll be substantially less than today's rates.

Hobbies. UBI will sustain them, and since there are no jobs for them, you will see more people doi g what they love for no pay or little pay.

Oh, I see. It’s a fantasy world, where we can all try to better ourselves through arts, and become a well-rounded, satisfied individual.

Or there are a lot of folks who want to panhandle for a living. I hadn’t considered that.

Seriously. How are people going to pay rent and eat? I’m not talking about most people, I’m talking about ALL people.

Actually, I likely contribute to less than 1/100th of a percent. I don’t use all six U Scans for the entire day, and there wasn’t six cashiers waiting for me alone to shop so they could go home with a full days’ wages.

Those drive me nuts. Every-time I'm at the store they are there with their huge push carts blocking me while grabbing people's groceries. We did try it a few times. But I always prefer to pick out my out fruits, veggies, and meats.
