That's cause its a world phone. The SIM is there so you can use the phone outside of the US. But Verizon itself is CDMA and doesn't use it.

My contract is cool, I looked online and it was £15/month for unlimited texts and 300 mins (I hate talking on the phone) but I didn't sign up and a week later Vodafone phoned me and asked if I wanted it and I ummed and ahhd, they guy asked how much I currently spend and I said £10 so he said he'd do it for that price AND give me a new phone.

Yep, their new HTC model has the same thing IIRC.
