Damnit, I have a paper to write, but I want to respond to this.

Not just colors for Hanukkah but those be the Jewish colors, blue, white and silver at times, no complaints

A. We all know? not sure you are speaking for everyone
B. Religion isn't a collection of stories, hell even the bible isn't, it's a life and almost anything that goes with it (from the synagogue to the dining room to the bedroom) the stories are for our understanding and that alone which is generally why it does not really matter if the details are true or even the general subject... did it help you understand or teach you a lesson? if so, than the story had a point even if fictional... in other words, I do not think that a flood wiped out 99% of humanity... I do think that there was great destruction at some point and like in the story of Noah, it was brought about by our giant egos and contempt for each other

So basically pick and chose your own teaching points from the Torah. Got it. And there, to a tee, is the problem.

who said pick and choose? I just said, it's not a history textbook so we put the stories in perspective as to what we can learn from them... that's not picking and choosing, an example of what you are talking about would be saying well kosher is important and the sabbath is not so I'll just follow kashrut but not the sabbath

I feel like bitching about people using the term "Happy Holidays" is on par with bitching about people who say "Merry Christmas."

The thing is, the latter of these rarely happens. Yes, many stores encourage their employees to say this, not to shit on Christmas and make baby Jesus cry but because you cannot assume everyone is Christian and/or celebrates Christmas, and it's not like you cannot answer back with a holiday greeting of your choosing. In the case of something like the tree, again, it's not trying to piss people off, it's trying to be inclusive. I celebrate Christmas and I'm not religious, as do many others. The tree is a symbol of the festive holiday season, and has nothing to do with Jesus or God or anything. Tree worship isn't exclusively a Christian thing.

People are free to celebrate what they want (or not celebrate, if that's their thing). Nobody's trying to take that away. Including others doesn't lessen your rights. Most people don't care what others choose to say, whether it's Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, etc. It's not like if you say Merry Christmas to atheists we burn and sizzle with damnation or anything. The only time it gets my goat is when governments and/or public schools favor celebration of a particular religious holiday (e.g. celebrating Christmas only or Hannukah only).

I'm Atheist. I say Merry Christmas. It's not offensive. Just because someone doesn't celebrate the holiday doesn't mean they can't have a nice December 25th.

And its tradition to get "winter break" around Christmas. I can tell you that kids don't give a shit. It's just parents who think that everything should revolve around them. The entitlement in this country is beyond retarded.

Do you think that sentiment is growing or diminishing? Us being entitled to things.

I find the baby boomer generation to be highly damaged in this regard. Can't tell much about younger generations yet. Kids are stupid.

Edit: and by kids I mean 30 year olds too.

There may be some hope. Hearing stories about how more and more 20 somethings are ditching cars, going more urban, flocking back inward.

Our grandkids could fuel the next great urban explosions.

yeah :/ but theyre doing it be hipstery, not practical.

The reason I say so is because I hang out with a group of baby boomers. Many of them are the hardest of hardcore Republicans. Small Government, no hand outs, etc etc. And then we talk about medicare, or the VA (many of them are veterans), or social security and they change their tune completely.
