I would think that anything stamped Hasselblad is always going to cost as much as a car.

While it may take simply amazing pictures, how the hell would you work on them? 78Megs per picture? You'd need a hellva machine to process that bastard.

Then you admit a P&S is limited...

Yes Point and shoot is limited. But a Canon G3 isn't. It's not an SLR and you can still manipulate the settings.

I'm saying don't spend the money on an SLR if you don't need it. Can easily save $1500 just by not using an SLR and still acheive quality pics.

The Oly C-5050 I bought for my wife a couple years back can be fully manual as well, not a DSLR either but a nice larger sturdy metal body to boot.

Yep I just picked one example out of many. The above shots were taken with an Olympus c8080

yeah, the Canon G series is a great series of "middle of the road" cameras. Halfway between SLR and P&S. I hate that I broke our G2.

I agree, if you have no desire to really learn how to use an SLR and don't care about the ability to change lenses and such, you don't need one. All you'll be doing is spending extra cash on what you'll be using as a glorified point and shoot. A lot of the higher end point and shoot cameras still come with 5-8 megapixels and give you lots of options to customize things to your liking, or to just set it auto and let the camera do all the thinking for you.

I LOVE my DSLR, but I also want a point and shoot to just play around with and for snapshots.

Wow. I wonder if that will bite them in the ass. Sure they make the best lenses but Canon's Digital Processor is far superior. (Consumer brands not professional cameras)
far superior is a bit much dont ya think? and if nikon users are like my friend they stay with nikon cause of familiarity with the interface etc..
