Black bears generally avoid people.

Here in Florida they don't, mainly because they can't. There's been a large amount of encroachment on their territory in recent years.

I almost hit one while driving a year or two back, middle of a neighborhood.

Oh come on. In 2015 they opened bear season in 4 of the 7 management areas, had a limited amount of tags for the hunt, denied a hunting season in 2016 and haven't decided yet for 2017.

There were less than 300 bears killed, not even 1% of the population
