That explains why it burns when you pee. You forgot your Jimmy Hat.

And now we have to deal with tentacle porn, bukakke, gundam and lollis. Whos the real loser here?

Tentacle porn has been around since the 18th century there. Something about pornography laws and illegal to draw coitus but since it's just a fish it doesnt count.

Although I know its hotly contested, but according to what little I've read on the subject, many people think/thought that the war against the Japan was already won - without dropping the bombs.

Since you never comment on things you know little about, I'm sure you'll come back and tell me how wrong that is.
The war with germany was 'over' after we had two footholds in europe in late 1944. If they had surrendered it would've saved countless lives. Hitler had Himmler's assistant in Berlin shot two days (himmler tried to surrender on 28 april) before he himself committed suicide two days later with the russians a few blocks away. The German government didnt formally surrender until May 8th 1945.

We asked Japan to surrender on July 26th. Dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on the 6th of August. 200,000 dead, 40,000 in the initial blast (generous estimate), for comparision there were the same number of German casulties in the battle of the bulge. Japan still refused to surrender. So on the 9th we dropped one on Nagasaki, with 80,000 (generous again) casualties. 280,000 dead, compared to say the battle of stalingrad were 2 MILLION people died in one year it did save lives.

(AND YES I DID HAVE TO LOOK UP EXACT NUMBERS)

One of the best presentations of the battle of Stalingrad was the beginning of the movie Enemy at the gates. Only every few Russian soldiers were given a gun and it was explained they could have a gun when someone with a gun died. They were told to keep advancing forward and anyone trying to turn around to retreat would be shot for treason.

If the guy behind them had a gun. :fly:

The brass stayed on the back line with a few armed soldiers for that very purpose. Very often by the time you found a gun, you had lost the few shells you were given and all the people dead had used up their few shots too. They just threw bodies at the Germans trying to get them to run out of ammo. Stalin was as much as a bastard as Hitler ever was.

One of teh collections I cataloged was for a guy charged with the rebuilding of Japan after the war. I had a lumber invoice from 1946 for like $6 million. It was teh coolest donation I had the opportunity to sort through.

Some random shots of Hiroshima...

140k people died for the greater good.

as for the "omg you killed innocent civilians" crap... how many civilians do you think would've died from a prolonged invasion? did all the civs in europe make it out nice and fine and alive?

2 cities in japan laid waste.

Was there such a thing as a city untouched in Europe? Northern Africa?

something to think about.

Either way I'm not losing sleep over it. Humans are a dime a dozen, and again, they're fuckers. If you don't want to be obliterated, don't launch surprise attacks on people. Everyone knows civilians die in war. They always have.

I'm pretty sure the Japanese civilians didn't have a say in whether Japan went to war with the US or not.

... I have a test on the Laws of Armed Conflict that I'm supposed to be studying for, I wonder if participating in this thread counts.

Of course they did. Would the emperor have gone to war if all of his people had revolted? I doubt it. You can't execute an entire nation and the Japanese have always been very philosophical and introspective. He would have relented. The decision of the people was to remain silent. Whatever the reason, be it fear, fervent support, traditional submission or honor, it was a conscious decision. They killed themselves.

Sorry I don't believe that at all.. They didn't even vote him into power.
