Food 2017 Garden Thread

Thyme is hard to kill, spreads to fill the container. Basil is a pain in my ass as it shoots up and dies quickly in the Florida heat, hard to keep it growing without being "leggy." Coriander is much the same (I assume, as its just the seeds from cilantro and cilantro is a "winter" plant and doesn't like heat.)

Rosemary is real easy for me to grow. High calcium, well draining soil and constant sun.

Oregano I've had fairly good luck despite it also supposedly being a winter plant. Half sun, normal soil. Burns real easily if you don't water it daily.

All my stuff is in pots with an inch of gravel in the bottom so that it doesn't clog the drain hole. I water everything I have daily, the excess drains out. What water gets held in the soil is determined by the soil mix (ie - rosemary is 1/3 sand, 1/2 normal organic potting soil, remaining 1/6 is crushed seashells from whatever most recent seafood we had)

I like mint as well, same conditions as the cilantro and oregano but even less sun.

Somehow the blight curbed itself a bit and i got some tomatoes.

Am happy.

We really need an enameled cast iron pot for when we cook tomatoes...
Woot.com typically has a decent 5 or 7 qt one on sale once a month.

Ladybutt and I got lucky a couple years back and found a 7 qt Le Creuset for like 75% off at the Williams Sonoma at Wiregrass mall. Love it.

Anyone that does canning @Valve1138

Steam canners are the shit. Halfed or less my canning time. Theyre officially approved by USDA as of 2015 now too.

Salsa turned out excellent. Slightly sweet, with a "warmth" to it, that just hangs around in your mouth for 20 or so seconds. Not very hot at all, but very tasty nonetheless.

We've been steamer canning for decades. You just can't do anything with meat problems ducts in them.

side note: i hate my electric stove.

I put the canner on it for 35 minutes with 8 cups of water in it. It didnt boil.

Put it on the portable butane stove, boiled in 4 minutes.

The canning pots are huge, and the burner on the glasstop electric turns itself off and on and off and on cause it cant sense a pan or something, and NEVER BOILS THE WATER.
