[Article] Article: raw feeding

After I adopted my dog, every few weeks he'd go out and eat grass and then spew thick yellow mucous. It was pretty gross, mustardy looking bile. I figured something else was going on, but after two months of that I knew what was up. I threw out his dog food, did some research, and then bought this shit:

Now he's like Hercules. His coat is glossy and fabulous, women everywhere want to take him home, and other dogs covet his lifestyle and merits. He is a shining example of how healthy a dog can be if you treat it like a king.

I mean except for the whole dying of bone cancer thing.

Do you know what he was on before you adopted him/before the Blue Buffalo?

Are you for real?

'The domestic cat[1][2] (Felis catus[2] or Felis silvestris catus[4]) is a small, usually furry, domesticated, carnivorous mammal'

'Cats feed on small prey, primarily birds and rodents.[128]'

'Cats are obligate carnivores: their physiology has evolved to efficiently process meat, and they have difficulty digesting plant matter'

'Obligate carnivores or 'true' carnivores depend on the nutrients only found in animal flesh for their survival. While they may consume small amounts of plant material, they lack the physiology required for the efficient digestion of vegetable matter and, in fact, some carnivorous mammals eat vegetation specifically as an emetic.'

Hmm, back to cats being carnivores (fact) and me musing on why cat foods have veg in (I suspect because its cheap) scientific american has this to say:

'So we fill them up on dry “kibble,” which combines animal products with vegetable-based starches, and meat-based canned “wet” foods, many containing parts of animals cats would likely never encounter, much less hunt and kill, in a purely natural situation. Most cats adapt to such diets, but it is far from ideal nutritionally.'

One wonders to what extent a pet food company can claim their food is 'the best' when it isn't ideal for an animals digestive system or natural diet?
