GAY Official "Letting off Steam" Thread

The reason I say so is because I hang out with a group of baby boomers. Many of them are the hardest of hardcore Republicans. Small Government, no hand outs, etc etc. And then we talk about medicare, or the VA (many of them are veterans), or social security and they change their tune completely.

I'd like to think my generation and younger are more intelligent than those that came before us. But sometimes, I'm not sure.

Did you know there is a "Holiday Tree" at Rockefeller center? Yes it is now being called by many a Holiday Tree as people in all religions commemorate their holidays at this time of the year with a decorated tree... only they don't. Hanukah symbols are: a menorah, a dreidel, jelly doughnuts (both the food and sexual act), gifts, gelt (coins)... no tree... no tree in Kwanzaa either unless its been changed since I studied it

Use "holiday" to describe the season if you want as there are more than one holidays during this time of the year... that is fine, but it is NOT a holiday tree, it is a Christmas tree... and for the record, they are pretty and fine, so just call them what they are and stop trying to make our holiday which ranks as 8th on the "Most Important Holiday" list in the Jewish Calender and make it synonymous with yours... it isn't that important nor is it in anyway like Christmas.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City.

The 2012 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be lit for the first time on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

shut your fucking hole

until another religion starts using the tree as a symbol for their holiday.... Hanukkah cards featuring them or Kwanzaa cards? or gifts? or whatever the fuck they do/say to each other at this time of year, it is Christian... Christians can't just say "y'know this really represents every religion at this time of year" this would be in line with Bart Simpson's line "Christmas is when people of all religion come together to worship Christ" we don't want your holiday or religion or symbols thereof... it's not an American symbol

and to atheists, while I'm sure it seems like all religious symbols are bullshit so who cares which symbol means Christmas or the season as a whole, but to those that are tied to any specific group... it matters. I talk to my Canadian friend about wanting the Skins to demolish the Cowboys and he responds generally "you're all morons, one is the same as another"... he is generally not asked many football related questions

definitely more intelligent but a lot less wise as is and will always be the pattern

the older generation knows a little more what to do with the skills and smarts that the younger has more than they do

This would mean that human progress is going backwards. It isnt.

not backwards just not in keeping with the pace of our knowledge/intelligence growth... youth can build off pf the intelligence and knowledge base of those that came before thus raising it and quickly, the only thing that cannot be taught is life experience which is one of the main components of wisdom

this does not mean wisdom is not growing, but not growing as quickly as intelligence

I'm starting to get your picture of atheists. As far as I'm personally concerned, its very wrong. I *care* about Christmas. Yes, if you know the whole history about Christians trying to roll Pagans into their fold (and I'd bet most Christians don't), the idea of birth of Christ in December and/or the tree is fucking stupid. However, tradition is tradition. Have fun with it and stop taking shit so seriously. (A general statement not directed entirely at you.)

Fair point about traditions and their value. I'm not taking it quite as seriously as how I'm expressing this I think. Would it make a difference knowing that that point of Chanukah, like the main point of the whole thing/traditions of the holiday/and reason we went to war in the 1st place creating the holiday is to fight against "conformity"? The irony slightly sickens me.

and I know atheists come in all shapes and sizes... had a very intelligent one as a roommate for many years and generalizations I make are just that, there are many many exceptions to these statements on both sides of the coin

I guess that's the point. Going back and saying 'The christmas tree isn't christmas' is like going back and saying 'black people todau need reparations for slavery'.

I wasn't around when the tree and other things weren't part of christmas. For as long as I have been alive, the tree has been a christmas tree, and black people haven't been slaves. Since that time is now a considerable amount of time, that is what it is, and that is what it shall be. Any attempts by others to make me change my mind based on events well over a hundred and fifty years past are pretty pointless.

your religion took it from other religions and traditions. in fact, virtually every tradition of christmas - including its date - was adopted from another one

Stop your childish bitching and crying. The tree was not renamed. It's being called a christmas tree by rockefeller center.

Way to assume.
How many Christians do you know named Mort?

ok their religion, fucks given. actually, it's the same one. they just don't appreciate the sequels

Either way, this moaning about a war on christmas is about the dumbest goddamn bullshit fake controversy that conservatives have stirred up in years. So what if some people want to do things differently? So what if people want to change tradition? Tradition for the sake of tradition is worthless, if it's worthy of staying a tradition it will do so of its own merits.

And the fact of the matter is that christmas is the single most ubiquitous holiday in the country. Christmas season starts nearly a month before the actual date and in some cases BEFORE another major national holiday. So it takes a seriously case of egocentric self delusion to think that because someone says "happy holidays" that they're trying to erase christmas from american culture.

what of my religion was adopted from elsewhere?

I am aware that some are still calling it a Christmas tree and some are not (it's not like it has an official name)... I never have liked and continue not to like the overlap between Christmas and Chanukkah. It is counter to the very idea of our holiday, none of our other ten or so holidays we have is as much about non-conformity as Chanukkah and yet it has been the most diluted by Christianity. So either read this point and try to comprehend the point I am making or keep thinking it solely has to do with the name of a tree and read a different thread
