WTF $5/Gallon?

I thought we did have those already..

We would have had a lot more now, and for cheaper, if the emission regulations were relaxed. State holdouts like CA were the places that stopped official DOT from allowing diesels into the country until they ran complicated and expensive emission-cutting technologies, and only now are slowly getting into the market. Even Honda has a great diesel but it is unlikely we will see it over here because to be DOT supported and therefore can legally be bought and sold in the US, it has to pass all 50 state's regulations. The Honda diesel, named one of the best powerplants of the year when it was introduced, does not meet CA standards.

Nor Subaru's diesel.

What about all the clean diesels? They are cleaner than the petrol cars..

The only clean diesels in the states were begged and pleaded to get into the states and use very expensive tech to get them DOT approved, as reflected in the much higher prices. And only by VW and Mercedes. What about the brilliant ford diesels in europe? Even the same exact cars available globally, like the Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla or Subaru forester or Ford Focus (2012 model) don't have a US diesel model.
 
Give me a B100 and SVO certified engine with particulate filter and burn off (Honda's tech that doesn't use urea to filter the exhaust) and I will gladly pay a $1500 premium for a car to have that.

I think BMW is bringing one again.

Because there is no march no one cares? Let me remind you that this is in Europe where they have a much more progressive mindset than over here. I'm willing to bet my virgin ass that the Europeans really really want this.

The European Commission said phasing out "conventionally fuelled" cars from urban areas would cut reliance on oil and help cut carbon emissions by 60%.
But UK Transport Minister Norman Baker said it should not be "involved" in individual cities' transport choices.
"We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas," he said.

That's the UK. I'd hardly account their opinion as a general consensus of all Europe. They are more like the US than the rest of Europe.

Hmm, very interesting article.

As part of this, it wants half of "middle distance journeys" between cities - above approximately 186 miles - to shift from road to rail.

Completely unusable as major cities are MORE than 186 miles apart in the US. Rail between them just wouldn't work at all. This MIGHT work in Europe, however.

It's probably more on the oil companies than the car makers. Big oil stands to lose revenue if gas mileage improves 20% or so because more cars are running diesel, or better yet biodiesel.

Yeah that too... They want to kill it just like they did rail back in the 50s?
 
They use it for buses around Boston, AFAIK there have been no major incidents.

Same for buses and UPS trucks that I have seen. No real incidents. But I know at least in Cleveland those busses can't go on certain routes because some of the roads do not allow compressed gasses of any sort on/thru them. Don't know the basis for that.

Edit: the GX IS available all over. My mistake.

It's been in wide use in Australia for decades. I think there have been a handful of incidents in that time, so it's pretty safe. Just as safe as having a tank full of petrol in your car.
