Economy is soo bad that people can't afford food!

Not that I agree with abusing the system, but let me play Devil's Advocate a minute (I love doing that :fly: )

The area they are in, Fostoria, is really small, separated by lots of land. The average mileage on cars there is 30 to 40K a year because work and home and stores for groceries is so spread out. The town itself is a small town on a major state route junction. First thing would be for them to move.

Lots of the business there is by travellers to places like restaurants and gas stations. If people aren't driving as much (which is true) and they aren't spending as much on restaurant or fast food to save money (which they are) that town's "industries" would suffer. When she says restaurants and such aren't hiring, she probably isn't lying.

Getting a job elsewhere would involve driving to the next biggest town, the hole that is Toledo. Driving 40 miles each way to get the only job available in that dying town (McD's) isn't at all wise.

Now granted the fat bitch needs to die AND stop abusing the system, she might make some real points. She is of course taking them to her advantage, but the point that lower income people living in a town that has no public transport (which Fostoria does not have) and that the average commute is double digits (negating the argument for walking or even biking) in an area with 4 seasons, finding a job would be difficult. Also, she probably has no money to transfer to a better city, either, so she's in essence stuck.

The bitch still needs to die, though.

They should have a draft for welfare people only. You can find a job? Fine, we got one for you. We can always use another ditch digger in Iraq. They work off the weight or provide one hell of a human shield for the regular enlisted.

Nature gave us feet upon which to walk, and brains with which to ponder complex thoughts and puzzle out solutions to problems.

If you are a useless turd living in a useless town and lack a vehicle to quickly get around then it is time to walk to a new town and start anew. There are always a million reasons to not do something. Perseverance is a virtue.

I've always wondered why Ethiopians starving in the middle of the desert just didn't leave. If they are starving then at least try to escape. Just proves people don't make the smartest choices.

That is exactly her issue.

The resolution would be to kill said "infection" from society.

They don't have enough money/food/water to make the journey.

Kinda like people living in WV and PA and OH. They don't have enough money to escape living in shitholes.

Yeah, if KNYTE can get out of a shithole (Utah), then anyone can. He's got short legs = lots of walking

Of course he also had money/credit card to do the move and had a job or at least a lead to a job before he moved as well as money to live off of for a bit until he did start bringing home a paycheck.

If he wasn't there doing that, how would Kiwi do it?

Just looking at the market this summer and gas costs(nat gas) I think you will see many lower income individuals dying this winter. Natural gas costs have risen 80% in IL since January and are continuing the climb upwards. The Utility I am currently marketing in is up to $1.55 per therm for July, which is normally the lowest priced month of the year. Last year the price for July was 0.80 per therm and jumped to over a dollar in winter. If this trend continues these people will be paying over $1.80 per therm in the winter and will not be able to heat their homes.

Your average 2bed 2bath household consumes about 400-600 therms a month in the winter. Larger homes obviously use more gas but your average bill with these prices will be over $1,000 a month just to heat the house. Anyone who uses natural gas for business purposes will be closing or falling deep into debt. Half the people we talk to even in middle of July are having a hard time paying bills. At least 8 out of 10 customers we talk to are "bad credit" customers and we cannot enroll them. Last year it was around 2 out of 10...

I know this isn't exactly on-topic but I figured someone might be interested in what we have been dealing with in the energy market.

The obvious solution is to move to Tampa.

Expect Chicago and most of Ohio to be arriving shortly....

Yeah my energy bills are out of control, and I'm in a little 2nd floor apartment with the benefit of apartments above, below and to the side of me for insulation... my electric bill is around 150-200 a month, and my gas bill is $60 a month... in the summer time, the only thing we are using gas for right now is laundry, how ridiculous is that?

Wahhhh, I pay $225 a month at least for electric. And now it's $270 a month for oil heat 10 months out of the year.

I've saved about $50 - $75 a month by switching to those CFL light bulbs and unplugging electronics that I rarely use. I also downsized my bar cooler to a small under counter fridge to save another $50 a month. I used to get $350 a month electric bills on a regular basis. :fly: My bill last month was $225 , it was quit exciting actually.

There's simple ways to reduce your electric bill.

they could always move. the only thing that bothers me about this is they havn't exausted all of their options and seem to be unwilling to do so...

Outside of that, 45 years working at GM leaves alot of money behind... these people are just horrible with finances. Doesn't matter if they had 100k a year jobs, they'd still end up with nothing and begging for food at the end of the month.

Welfare should only be given to those willing to take and do well in public provided classes on subjects such as raising a child, proper finances, english, job skills, etc... if they are on welfare, they arn't working anyways, so why can't they show up to a few hours of classes a week?

If it was up to me, I'd get rid of welfare/social security altogethor. Provide public day care and bus passes to those who are below a certain income, and limit the amount of years they can be on foodstamps.

Hell, make them go out in a field and dig a ditch for their government supplements. That's what they made them do when the system started. We have plenty of levee's that need more dirt thrown on them.

How big is your place? Is it a house or an apartment?

I've been working up in Prudhoe bay and they've passed measure to make a natural gas line next to the oil pipeline down to Alberta, possibly into the US. They have tons of natural gas up there, so when that happens... we should have a steady stream of supply coming in which will hopefully significantly reduce the costs.

That's more than a few years away though, they want to have it done in the next 5 years.

How big is your place? Is it a house or an apartment?

House. About 2300 sq ft with the finished basement.

Fridge, freezer, bar fridge, electric hot water, full house connected entertainment deal which used to use computers everywhere but now uses cable box like devices for energy savings, shit ton of computer gear, etc, etc.
