Ontopic The Shooting Thread

Oh no. Gun owners are mostly whiny babies so the record of where the guns are is hundreds of millions of pieces of paper that aren't necessarily right. We consider the "right to own guns" more sacred than the right to life.
Don't bother here, Hoggz. A few years back, I was told I'm an idiot because I said people have a right not to be shot.

the problem is if he is once again going to be written off as a mentally ill "lone wolf," as if what he did isn't the natural consequences of the bigoted rhetoric he and many others consume.

y'all are giving Hoggz a rash of shit right now, but this coordinated dehumanization through language and propaganda and law (both de facto and de jure) is exactly what allows people to join in or sit by as shit slides further into hell.
The difference between talking to you and Hoggz is even though you two have the same political leanings when you engage in a conversation with one of us on a given topic you don't come off as an arrogant, know it all, asshole who thinks every white person in America with the exception of you is a racist Nazi. I don't always agree with you but I always respect your opinions. You put a lot of thought into your posts and can back up what you say with sources more times than not.

tbh I think we take turns and I've definitely been accused of (and probably correctly) being arrogant & angry about this stuff.

MLK was only palatable when Malcolm X was the alternative; the things I say are only given consideration when something more radical is the contrast.

(to be clear, I'm not genuinely comparing either of us posting on UF to either of them, it's just a familiar example with a recognizeable dynamic)

it is also emotionally exhausting to constantly play the role of Cassandra, when you hit your limit, patience is one of the first things to go. sometimes I have the energy to try to explain things, and sometimes all I can do is tell someone to eat my shit and hair. I've been selfishly disengaged from a lot of discourse lately because I want to save that energy for my kid - I don't want to spend all of my patience engaging in arguments with people who are dedicated to their ignorance* and then not have any left for her.

* this is a general description that includes people not on UF/this is not me calling anyone here that; I'm including FB arguments etc.

I'm not sure describing your redirection of energy to your kid as "selfish" really hits the nail anywhere near the head...
