Ontopic The 3D printing thread

right? Straight outta the box too.

@fly flip it around so we can see the tiny wording on the other side of the stern.
That's a bit tough to read, and even tougher to photograph. Should it have come out flawlessly?

that may be the limitation of your printers best capability. I dont see how it could be any better with teh layer thickness as it is.

That does seem bad. Should I be printing this stuff in the garage or on the lanai?
I'm not too concerned, personally. PLA is non-toxic by itself and our bodies are well adapted to dealing with dust.

Printing ABS plastic gives off horrible fumes though, as do some other plastics. But easy solution to that: don't use ABS :)

Nah, Google how to build an IKEA Lack enclosure and then whip up a fume extractor with a little filter. Should be all you need.
Enclosure will help keep temps stable and give a little bit of muffling as well.

Yeah with the stock 0.4mm nozzle you're not going to do better than that.

Look at how well the layers are aligned, though. And the corners! you can see a little difference looking up the left hand side where the printer may or may not have started the outer perimeter on that corner, but that difference is so small...

Yup.

Fly, to be clear on the above with the lower layers comment, I'd just run that fucker. You can tweak it, but it is 100% not needed. Depends on if you want to get it as perfect as possible, or if you just want to print shit.

Microplastics in us does seem to be a thing, and not a very good one. If I can (easily) reduce even a small amount, that seems worthwhile.

Yup. Just paint the things. You might want to sand them down before doing so otherwise the layers will be visible.

Don't know that it matters but I always get the stuff advertised to stick to plastic.

I prime 3D prints, two or three thin coats to help fill on the print lines without obscuring details.
I've been using Vallejo primer and brushing it on. Then I paint (acrylics- Vallejo, citadel or army painter) then matte varnish. Most of the time you can't tell it was 3D printed.
I especially like resin printed.

2nd option is just buy PETG (or ABS, though I'd do the vented enclosure thing first) and skip the painting step altogether.

Buy a couple colors and switch colors halfway through and you can do stuff like this for making signs:

Like the dildo I made with your design for his beer thing.
