You've dealt with customers in this area before.

Which is more efficient communication.

A. Describing the chemical properties of antifreeze and how it relates to the inner workings of an engine and explaining it in lay terms people who live in a place where it rarely if ever freezes can understand and selling them on why this is important.

B. Just calling it "coolant" and having them enthusiastically say "yes, I need that".

I, generally, found that an educated customer was a happy customer.

That's also true sometimes.

Sometimes is just comes down to describing technical things to people who don't understand the technicalities and sometimes aren't really interested in them as long as everything works trouble-free like it's supposed to.

If we both have a half-hour to burn and they're even interested, sure, get into that and spread some education. Most times the mechanic doesn't have that kind of time because they have to fix lots of cars to pay their bills and the customer doesn't have that kind of time or interest because they have something else they're good at that pays their bills and their car not working is a hinderance to that and they just want it to work, like now.

That's when just saying "coolant" saves a lot of time and BS for both parties.

It's not about being technically correct (even though you are). It's about dealing with other humans.

I don't tell people they need Tetrafluoroethane and then go about describing to them what that is and what it does. I tell them they need "refrigerant", because they all know what a refrigerator is and they know it's cold inside and that's what they want their car to be.

Our furnace exhaust got blocked with ice and we were without heat for a day at -35 C.

Probably some CO inhaled .
Nah, that's why it wouldn't run - no fresh intake, there are two pressure switches that avoid that. Plus very sealed. I am assuming this is high efficiency as a regular furnace would have kept going. And yeah, it might have been crickets for you.
*I had that happen a few years ago. Apparently the screen over the intake wasn't tight. I found 5 sparrows in the burner box, off to one side. Totally dried but not burnt. Poor little fuckers.
** good way to fuck with someone - stick a dead bird/squirrel in the intake.

Is there another article about the poor quality of the tunnels? Or are you just going by the "rough ride" tunnels?
Rough ride is poor quality. We've been able to give a smooth ride in tunnels for hundreds of years. When you cant, and you start proposing new projects without taking the time to figure out what you did wrong, it's time to be concerned.

That first phonograph, what a turd! Cylindrical records? What a moron!

Actually they were a stepping stone to the vinyl everyone here has a boner for now. My family has a player with about a hundred cylinders, and it’s awesome.

Seems some sort of roadway material could be laid in the tunnel to smooth it out a bit.:iono: Might be easier than trying to get a rail system feeling really smooth.

The dick in me hopes Musk gets the work and runs into some big ass chunk of total shit diamond under there. :fly:

All great advances start smaller and have bumps along the way.

Take a dump on Edison why don’t cha.
I'll gladly take a shit all over Edison as it is well documented that he stole most of his parents and drove his competitors into the ground.

The problem I have with Musk is this cult of hero-worship that has grown up around him with no justification. In public he is a narcissistic twat most of the time, and professionally he promises the moon on every single thing and Space-X is the only thing that he's actually delivered on since he started making tangible products.

Any competent civil engineer, fresh out of school, could tell you the steps on how to get a smooth ride out of a tunnel. It would take someone with more experience to actually get it done, but someone with a sheepskin still dripping could tell you what should be done. A) he didn't hire someone competent B) he didn't listen to them in order to open the tunnel on time.
Both are unacceptable choices for any infrastructure.

Fuck Musk.

Well, if he’s not hiring the best people, that IS a mistake. I’m pretty sure a lot of what you mentioned is typical of all type-A business leaders, past and present. Edison was no saint.

Sucks about his parents.
