basically my thoughts exactly.
of the 3 sub plots that ran through it, luke/rey/ren was done fantastically, the other 2 were piss poor.
I can't believe that after VII they just ran finn's character arc into the ground like that.
that red room scene though......fuck me up. amazing.

The series in it's entirety has rode the soundtracks coat-tails all along .
But nary a fan would admit to being a second hand Gustav Holtz fan .
that just takes way too much away from how brilliant the design of star wars was.
the set dressing, costume work, visual effects given when they were made.....there were too many iconic things about those movies to dismiss them as clinging to a soundtrack.

You misquote me " clinging to a soundtrack " implies childishness , coat-tail riding is just opportunism .

the visual work far surpassed the writing and acting, both in creativity and quality. but there's a lot to be said for how dominant of a franchise it is/was.
I tried to use The Force to lift a rock out of the driveway once, circa late 70's/early 80's. It didn't work, but only because I was distracted and didn't let The Force flow through me. I think that was my initial step into the dark side. It's been downhill ever since.
Also all the new "star wars" are bullshit. Marketing and nothing more. They're akin to making Hendrix 4th album...or Zeppelin's 10th.

100% just marketing, but I still think episode vii is a fantastic new hope remake. I like it more than the original from a quality movie standpoint. and rogue one was brilliantly done. the true star wars war movie we never got.
hopefully jj can deliver on ep ix. i trust him to put the pieces back together after this basura.
