FYI Spotify Family Plan

i gave up on pandora cause it's suuuuuuuper repetitive. i just stick to sirius xm now, and thats mainly for convienence. really dling mp3's, sorting them, renaming them, categorizing them... all a big pain in the ass.

i also feel zero guilt in pirating, music royalties is a bullshit concept imo. why don't i get royalties for the buildings i design? theoretically shouldn't i get a kickback for everyone that uses one of those buildings? and why does it only pertain to specific art forms. if an artist paints something anyone can take pictures and put them on the internet effectively stealing his art since everyone can now see it for free. music royalties have also only existed a short time in the grand scheme of things, artists have only lived on record sales since like the 60's/70's and their bubble popped in the late 90's with napster correcting the market. before that, during that, and now after that their cash cow is in selling tickets to concerts. i've worked on plenty of arenas where they have concerts, i've never once gotten royalties for people sitting in those seats.

Pirating is too much of a pain in the ass. That is where the record industry has really learned something. Now I just download shit from Spotify, cause its 100x easier. And $2.75/mo is a pittance for that convenience. And I get to support artists, in a minuscule way, to boot.

Your designs are probably fucked up.

you know, i never pirated shit out of cost savings for the most part, i did it because i could click, and have the thing i wanted in 10 minutes. or 10 seconds, or no seconds.

The entire pirating world spent years yelling at the RIAA that the whole reason we were pirating is because music was grossly overpriced. Now we have a way to pay for the music we want at reasonable prices and people still pirate for reasons that stopped being relevant shortly after justin timberlake sold napster.

I think most pirating is largely dying out, compared to how out was skyrocketing song the general population before. Most people just hop YouTube if there's a song they want to listen to or use one of music services for general listening. If they really want an mp3, itunes makes it easy and cost effective for most people, artists still cry about itunes though because it removes their ability to package 10 shitty songs with one good song.

Exactly. Which is why services like Spotify are so awesome. They give us exactly what we were asking for when we were pirates.

The first time a service is able to do this for all tv/movies is when I stop fucking around with Plex.

Piracy has been telling the industry for years that they have to compete with "free". I'm glad these services exist not just for myself but for all tech-savvy people that don't want to pirate for their friends/family.

Those of us that have been pirating shit since the 90s have run through the gauntlet of crappy p2p services, sites loaded with malware, and various other problems that allowed us to recognize the shady shit on instinct. But in the early 2000s everyone and their grandmother insisted that their computer savvy friend help them download a fuckton of movies, music, and tv shows. If we declined it led to "help I've got a virus" a few weeks later because they're running limewire or emule or some other application that's more infectious than an Arizona lot lizard.

I want free music, can you help me?
No that's a massive hassle, mom.
My computer has a virus, can you help me?
It's because you installed limewire, mom.
Well you wouldn't help me download music and this was easy!
It's not supposed to be easy, don't download that shit.
But I want free music!

Do you think they're appropriate in any industry?
Very few, and even those are becoming outdated. Mainly ones without other means to make an income. With music performance has historically been the way to make money and will continue top be so in the future. Not record sales. Everything else should be considered advertising for their performances.

or those of us that were pros skipped all that shit.

I used to love SiriusXM when I had it, but the only punk station would always have dumb talk shows I didn't care about on during my long commute to school after work.

I used to pirate more, but a lot of the bands/artists I listen to now are small fry and/or DIY, so I only pirate to get a digital copy if the album I buy doesn't come with one. I know these folks, a lot of them anyway, and they're not doing it to get rich (which is good because they're not going to) but I also see the sacrifices they make for their art, the long tours at dingy dive bars, barely scraping by, and I can't justify stealing from them if I'm going to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
