The parking brake exists so that you're not putting all of the vehicle's weight on the transmission. It's not just a wear issue but a safety issue. Not using the parking brake means there is a single point of failure in keeping the vehicle in place.

Nowhere near that big of an issue as it is nowhere near the entire weight of the vehicle resting on the parking sprag. If you live in San Fran you would do well to use the parking brake, but most people don't live there.
Besides that, the possibility of a vehicle having a worn or poorly adjusted parking brake far outweighs the possibility of a vehicle having a bad parking sprag.

I vent about it because I've spent so much time thinking about it. I was brought up a Christian going to a Lutheran school from preschool to sixth grade. Then I moved and was forced to go to church and join a bible study group at the public school I went to. After graduating high school, I moved into my aunt and uncle's house who go to church every weekend and everything they do is religiously oriented. I couldn't have a casual conversation with them without the whole thing turning into a shit fest argument. We've almost come to fisticuffs because we both are stubborn as shit. When I moved out, I no longer had to answer to anyone and for once, could let all that anger out about being forced to believe in something that I couldn't believe in. 23 years of that. Listening to the shit they spew and not being able to have my own opinion on the matter. Now I do, and it feels good. I can say whatever the fuck I want and I don't give a shit anymore. I felt so angry all the time because I couldn't say anything or have my own opinion. Note I do and I can vent about these people, and I'm so much happier because of it.
Trust me, it takes on a whole new level when someone brings a "think of the children" into it.

not specifically at you, but there's a ton of peeps with this view about all kinds of things.
First, you had your own opinion. No one can take that away from you. Second, at times, everyone in life everywhere holds their tongue to keep the peace.

For example, growing up I wanted to swear like a sailor at home around my family and didn't think it would be a big deal if I did. The only reason I didn't is because I valued my teeth and playing with my friends. I'm not angry about it looking back, and wasn't angry then. It's just the way it was.

If the vehicle gets hit then it will absolutely be the entire weight. Replacing a parking brake is significantly cheaper than a part of the transmission.

If the vehicle gets hit, the amount of weight on the parking pawl is only as much as the tires resistance on the pavement, not the full weight of the vehicle. The tires will lose traction and slip far before the full weight of the vehicle is transmitted to the pawl.

It's all about the available friction, not the potential energy of the car.

My grandfather had a bronco II years ago, parking sprag let go in the transmission and it crashed through his garage door, and it wasn't on much of a hill.

Not really. In addition to what Jehannum said, you'd have the momentum of the other vehicle hitting the parked car which can be a helluva lot more than the weight of the vehicle. In any case, it's not like the parking brake will help in that situation either

That era Fords were horrible about the key switch going bad, and not having the gearshift go fully into a particular gear. Was it actually a failure of the sprag, or was it that the gearshift didn't completely lock into park or some other failure?

I lived in Colorado. I Always used my parking break (then again, I always drove sticks).

now I live in florida. I drive an automatic. For the life of me, in this flat fucking hickwoods region, I can't figure out a single justification for using my parking break outside of drifting.

Its just force of habit for me. Stop the car, shift into park, yank the brake up, get out ,lock

Down here, no. There are driveways in Tally that are on hills though, I'll use mine when I visit ma-in-law

Ok, you're right. I could have my own opinion. I did. But I was unable to vocalize it and tell these certain people that they were making me feel stupid for not believing the same things they did.

As a young adult who had been told what to do his whole life, not really ever being able to express myself, do the things I found fun, hang out with my friends and get in trouble, I had no release. That's what it came down to. No way to vent all of these frustrations, the feeling of being restrained to do only that which others allow me to do instead of doing what I want to do. And it's not things like clean your room or wash the dishes. It was things like hey can I go ride my bike around the lake with my friends and hey dad, can I help you change the brakes on the car? Things that would be fun and/or educational.

I'm not saying my parents were bad parents. Not at all. They loved the shit out of me. But they were pretty much helicopter parents, telling me how to live my life.

This is now why I ride a motorcycle everyday and jump out of airplanes on occasion. Do other things that might be considered dangerous like travelling around the country to see new places and hang out with internet friends. At 32 I'm finally able to live out my 20's. Reckless and carefree.

Right but the transmission could still be damaged and disengage after the impact making it a rolling hazard. Having the parking brake on adds another item to hold the vehicle still in the event something happens to the transmission.

It's the reason parking brakes exist. They're not for hills, they're for parking in general.
