Again, if shit wasn't so expensive...

It really isnt a contention of what your opinion is as long as you dont interfere with the rights of others.

I like the look of the AR... looks sexy as hell..

But the problem I have with it is that it's only a .223 caliber.. Thus why I prefer the new 6.8, or the good ol' AK(.308)..

The AK was originally (And still largely) 7.62x39, ballistically similar to a .30-30 - nothing at all like a .308.

A 7.62x54R is much closer to a .308 (7.62x51 NATO), kind of between a .308 and .30-06 actually.

There are many variants in a variety of calibres now though.

I fired a .308 AK awhile ago at the range with my buddies... it was an AK my ex marine friend picked up years ago when he was serving in Africa..

 I helped write that, so long ago. Love how they stole it and posted it on their website now. Fuckin goatboy >.>

Data on hundreds of shootings collected by the Army Wound Data and Munitions Effectiveness Team and data from civilian shootings with 7.62×39mm ammunition, like from the AK-47, bear out the less than stellar lethality of the round.

I dont have links to the studies anymore but NATO ammo is tres better than 7.62x39. Not talking about what you buy at gander mountain though.

Edit: Commercial .223 is not the same as 5.56 NATO usually. It is the same size for all intents and purposes but the military equivalent is loaded hotter and heavier.

i'm a fan of the .223.

i'm out to mercilessly kill paper though, nothing more.

the small calibers are great for accuracy.. unfortunately they are also great for punching through your neighbours walls... and their neighbours walls..

For this reason I love the FN FiveSeven. 20rnd cap mag of .17 caliber. So that's 21 bullets ready to go in a hand gun.. sweet... plus certain rounds you can get are armor piercing.

That's a good article!

I know some people swear by NATO ammo, but I only have my preferences from what I have experiienced with different calibers (what they punch through, how they punch through, accuracy, bullet drop, recoil, etc.). To be honest, it could of been the gun instead of the rounds..

The guy I shoot with loads some of his own rounds.. He's ex Marine Recon..

The gun makes all the difference. Muzzle velocity difference between a 11", 16" and 20" barrel is significant. Not to mention range to target. 5.56 is perfect for what it was designed for, sub 200 meter firefights it is the best of the best. Long range it is effective, but not as good as a real 7.62x51.

7.62x39 (Russian ammo) was made to be cheap and to use the same tooling as their 7.62x54 ammo. Just like AKs dont require a lot of machine processes to make. It's made for economy.

As usual, hitting your target under pressure and breathing hard are still more important skills than having the right ammunition. Something like 90% of shots fired in modern warfare are complete misses.

For around the house, sub 50 meters, and high stress, Id pick a shotgun.
