I have a 3 prong wall socket for the dryer. My dryer is 4 prong. I how good/bad of an idea is it to change the dryer to 3 prong?

Id switch the wall plug to a proper receptacle. A hot neutral can ruin your day, and 3 prong plugs have bonded neutrals and grounds. Meaning if you end up with a hot neutral, your dryer chassis is hot.

Tell that to the cable companies who bond to the plastic water pipes or plastic electrical service entrances.
They did that on my house, almost. Our service comes in via metal pipe, but at some point, the pipe got painted. The cable box was grounded to a standoff that was worm-clamped onto the painted pipe. No grounding was occurring.

PO of my house was probably Navy. Everything non-moving got painted. I assume that whatever was moving, he saluted.
