[Space Nerds] Let's talk about Curiosity.

The lead designer and director guy failed high school geometry 2 times, and finally passed with a F+.
I don't feel so bad now having almost failed hs geometry.

wow that seems overly complicated, but necessary. really amazing the coordination. so many parts that could have gone wrong.

There was a board game called Liftoff! which was made into a computer game called Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space which, years later, was lovingly remade into a program that runs on modern computers. You can find it here: http://www.raceintospace.org/ . This game captures the risk, drama, and arbitrary cruelness of the cosmos.

I heard that article on public radio also. Good interview.

Is that game better than your Kerbal Space thingie?

Completely different kind of game. It's turn based, so it's not suitable for you and your adderall frayed attention span. Basically you run the space program of the US or USSR starting in 1957 and with the ultimate goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. You begin by researching a small rocket and satellite program and from there you head into the manned space program. You decide which programs you'd like to research, manage your astronaut corps, plan missions and manage risk to meet the numerous milestones on the path to a manned Lunar landing, and deal with with the inevitable consequences of said risk. To be fair, luck plays a huge role in the game, but it's still an engaging. RPS did a write up on it a few years ago ( http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/07/20/the-outward-urge-buzz-aldrins-race-into-space/ ). There's also a great fan site with a lot of good information to help you understand what all the various programs and mission profiles went together, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Aren't all games turn based if you're the only one playing?

this is AMAZING to me...and something i can barely comprehend. the surprises that are yet to happen KILL me with anticipation!!!

So you got away with all the 'landing on the moon' shens so you think you can fool us all again with this nonsense? No way is that on Mars. The scientists aren't wearing anything like appropriate clothing for Mars, not even radiation proofed white coats. That pile of rocks in the background isn't going to fool anyone and the 'mars buggy' is still hooked up to the mains. A poor attempt at trolling by NASA.

Of course it's on Mars, who in their right mind would have carpet like that on Earth?
