Yeah it's excessive, but I'm not looking at it from my own personal perspective, which happens to be I think they are gratuitously unnecessary. I wouldn't have spent the billions on them, but they are clearly an engineering achievement of monumental proportions.

that remains to be seen IMO. They're having problems with erosion on the Palm Jumeriah already. They're having to continuously redredge to maintain the proper shape. If they can fix it such that it doesn't require constant major maintenance I'll consider it a wonder.
