Society is nice but in the end your personal well-being is really up to you.
Not saying we should go back to the 5th century but you should at least be able to keep you and yours alive without the grid for some weeks not days.
Like by your own hand, with the things you've put back for such an event, not by passing off that responsibility to some authority.
not sure how much or how many days but I'm amazed by the anger of those who reject the concept. meh, some of them think nobody will be useful in an apocalypse - random opinions seem to indicate they could be useful as portable snacks or firewood. Or both!

Expecting people to take a little self responsibility and keep some canned goods and environmentally unfriendly bottled water on hand incase of emergency? Pfft!! You can keep your freedom mister!!!!!
Knowing how some landlords think, those people will probably get charged for an indoor ice rink.
And god forbid they don't have renters insurance... which odds are they don't because it's too expensive.

The average is about $14/month. Tons of coverage for the cost of one shitty large pizza with 2 toppings. Some of those without power or insurance DID have the money but didn't buy.
I get that. But many of the people in those apartment weren't on that tight of a budget. They had decent jobs, making ok money. They bought a few latees and shit.
Yep Some for sure.
Funny thing about poverty though is it always affects those who can least afford it.
