There was a whole Indian awareness or interest thing that happened in the 70's. Not sure what kicked it off but it ran all the way down to pop culture, marketing materials, clothing fashion and home decor, etc. Was basically everywhere.

At the time, according to the paleface government, you had to have something like 1/16 or 1/32 native blood to be considered an Indian. So everybody and their dog it seemed was digging through the family tree trying to find some native blood somewhere. They could get benefits from it, and some probably just because it was cool.

So yeah, they have to guard against stuff like that. The way things were going their whole culture and heritage would've ended up getting diluted down to nothing more than a label or a brand.

One thing (as Americans) that we are excellent at is becoming suddenly concerned once numbers dwindle to a certain point. Until then, we don’t care. I guess the Cherokee Nation finally reached that point.

Again, the people who made the biggest ruckus out of her saying that (years ago now) has always been the republicans. If Trump and every other right wing mouthpiece that calls her names would’ve shut it long ago, it wouldn’t be an issue.

Face it. Trump’s satisfaction in life comes from poking people in the eye. He’s a fucking troll. He’s creating more trolls. If he didn’t get applause from a bunch of sycophants and idiots, he’d would’ve stopped using that line long ago.

Part of the reason they have to guard against it..

If you can claim, iirc 1/16th seminole tribe of Florida affiliation, you get a part of the tribe gambling money. It's the same for other tribes too that are bringing in profits derided from their 'sovereign territorial lands', so it's in the tribes interest to keep it as exclusionary as possible to not dilute the payout pool.

The U.S. embassy in Australia apologized after a “training error” distributed a fake meeting invitation that included as its main image a photo of a cat dressed in Cookie Monster pajamas.

The email, with the subject “meeting” and an RSVP option, featured a tabby cat wearing the Sesame Street character's full-body blue outfit and holding a plate of chocolate chip cookies beneath the title “cat pajama-jam.”

The email was sent out by the U.S. Department of State and it’s unclear how widely it was distributed, the Australian Associated Press reported Sunday.
Gavin Sundwall, the public affairs counselor to the U.S. mission to Australia, joked in his apology that he was “sorry to disappoint” prospective attended to the event.
“Sorry to disappoint those of you who were hoping to attend this 'cat pajama-jam' party, but such an event falls well outside our area of expertise,” Sundwall wrote in a subsequent email. “It was a training error made by one of our new staff testing out our email newsletter platform.”

Email has been around how long? People who haven't figured it out by now deserve to be publicly mocked.

I love it here when people forget to BCC and then you get an "Happy Birthday" or "Congrats" email with 5000 people on it that everyone decides then need to reply all. Followed by another 1000 email replys telling people to stop replying all.

True.
I don't know about other places but in MN at that time there weren't the big casinos on the reservations like there are now. Those came a little later, but there were lots of other benefits people were chasing.
Tax breaks, college tuitions, lots of other types of govt assistance, and little things like not having to buy a fishing license, etc.

It's really no different than the people who do the whole stolen valor to claim vet benefits from places.

I juts was perusing the YouTube and before a video, an ad loaded for Elizabeth Warren. 5:30 long. The first minute or so devoted to her relatives (mostly registered republicans) discussing their displeasure with Trump’s Pocahontas remarks.

She just said a few months ago she wasn’t running for president. In other words, she’s a lying shitbag just like the rest of em.

The system needs to change. Money needs to get out of politics, but that’ll never happen. Congresspersons spend a huge portion of their time making phone calls to get money for the next election. It’s become a sport AND a profit center. I believe Trump ran strictly as a cash grab and he’s not alone.

Extinction-level event necessary.

Boy, the way the Cherokee Nation felt the need to respond so passionately would make one think she’s trying to cash in on profit sharing or something.

Didn’t she say in passing that she used her status as a distant descendant of an American Indian tribe to allow her into a school or something? Then the right grabbed it and made a huge deal out of it, and applied racist taunts whenever possible to further gin up their already rabid base.

They made the big deal out of it. All she did was take a DNA test to stick it to Trump and to perhaps stop the Pocahontas label (it won’t, that’s not how they roll) and now it seems the Cherokee Nation thinks she’s going to show up wanting reparations.

I'm on a five minute break at work and I'm about to type a fuvkton as I do, so don't have time for looking this up/take this with a helping heaping of salt, but yeah I think she claimed her ethnicity as Native American on a school application & theoretically got in as a diversity candidate? I don't know if it was ever stated that ethnicity/ affirmative action type quota choices are what got her in or if it was inconsequential. I know lots of folks have lots of different views on affirmative action/quota type programs and I'm not going down that road, but if that was what happened, and if you consider that the reason behind those programs is to give folks who have been disadvantaged a fair shot, then she took a space that could have gone to a needier person.

I don't think republicans care about any of that, but I can understand why that would be worth responding over in the first lace, and then when it comes to blood quantum stuff, that's a fucking HUGE can of worms

fffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu several times a week. thank cthulhu for the ignore feature on outlook

Why are you so passionate about this?
You know why? Because trump is a facist pile of horse shit, and all these people that think they're better than him really aren't because they continue to feed the troll. Coming out threatening to impeach trump without any valid reason or anywhere near enough political support to do so only proves him right. Coming out threatening to impeach Kavanaugh without a valid reason or anywhere near enough political support also proves him right. He keeps saying that, essentially, the left wing is butt-hurt and out to get him. So far he's been right about that. I want to see real changes and not just a bunch of inbred assholes yelling back and forth from both sides. I want to see someone up there who says "WTF ARE WE DOING???" and say "Less government, keep your restricted guns, anyone can marry anyone else and I don't have the right to tell you that you can't get an abortion?" I want to see someone stand up with actual evidence of a Russian collusion, with insider trading, with embezzlement charges and say THIS is why we're going to impeach you. Find that thing that turns his world upside down and impeach him for that. For a legitimate reason. Not just because we don't like what he's doing. But we all spend so much time yelling at each other, saying I'm right and your wrong that we fail to see what's really going on. If you fight every battle, you lose the war, which is what's happening now. Choose the battles wisely and put your efforts and resources in those select battles, and you'll conquer them. This is not a battle worth fighting, this Warren Native American thing. Who gives a flying fuck except that orange douche canoe?
