I got curious about a year or so ago about stocks and dove in with a massive 100 dollar investment..

Heres how i'm looking so far

XXX 9.41 +0.16 (1.73%) 26.83B
XXX 4.27 +0.11 (2.64%) 957.80M
XXX 86.39 +0.91 (1.06%) 93.64B
XXX 0.520 0.000 (0.00%) 11.16M

Anyone else invest and if so how are you doing? What is your strategy? I don't really have one, i pick companies i like and that look good and i think are bargains and i buy some stock and leave it.. I have no plans to liquidate anytime soon. I think of it as a savings account i can't immediatly access

Investing in individual stocks isn't called investing, its called gambling. :D I find the casinos to be more fun myself.

Long term investing in index funds is dry, boring, and the best way to try and make money on the stock market.

Oh, and I hate to gamble...

I prefer ETFs but i haven't started investing in those as of yet.. i don't think we're at the bottom of the ETFs i want to invest in.

But regardles.. this thread was a MASSIVE success.. LMFAO

i'm still trying to get my bottom line into the black. i have two big things left to pay off. i made a spreadsheet (google, not excel, fly) to work out the payout date and adjusted payments so that on my 30th birthday (next april) i'll be clear.

i did start putting some money into a high interest savings account (RBC high interest esavings... no fees, 2.75%), i'm sending 10% of each pay there. once I get about a one or two month float in there i'll start investing in riskier things.

ETFs make no sense for a long term investment strategy, imho. Sure, they are tax-efficient, but in an IRA that doesn't really matter. When you factor in brokerage fees every time you want to buy one, or rebalance your entire portfolio, they fail in comparison to a quality (Vanguard) index fund.

April and I use FNBO Direct as our joint emergency account. Their rate is currently 3.25%.

Or Schwab has a 'high yield' checking account that is currently at 2%, with no fees, they refund all ATM fees, and is also a brokerage account...

nice rate! right now i'm going to stick with the current account and lower rate because it's in canadian dollars, as is one of my loans, so it's kind of a hedge against currency weirdness. once that last loan is taken care of i'll move everything into USD and check it again.

edit: ok, that chequing account is badass though. that needs a second look right now.

between my input and company match I have ~14% of my salary going into 401k fidelity funds

Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2008 to 06/04/2008 is -5.2% :\

I';m not talking about an IRA or my 401k.. for that i agree vanguard funds are much better..

I have too many accounts spread out everywhere. That's what happens when you have a grandfather and now father in the business.

I'm jealous.. my folks didn't teach us anything.. i just kind of landed in this stuff by accident a few years ago after destroying my credit.. it's been a hell of a road but a very informative one.

Then what are you talking about? Short term investing with ETFs?

you can buy ETFs, you don't necessarily have to do it through an IRA or 401k..

I don't really plan out the short term/long term thing.. just kinda fly by the seat of my pants.. Look for "I'm bankrupt" thread in 3-6 months :D

In my traditional IRA, I'm down .91% since 12/31. In my Roth, I'm up 2.12%. My 401k investing options suck ass, so I'm sure its in the toilet.

Yes, but it would be silly to buy an ETF for short term investing. They just don't move enough because they are tied to an entire market. For long term investing, you should ONLY be thinking of 401k or IRAs until you've hit the IRS limit for both.

If you want any help, rather than the seat of your pants, with the long term stuff, I'd love to help.

Thanks.. everything else is maxed.. 401k on it's way.. It's in deed fun to learn :D
