Utah is that expensive??!?! Wtf??!? We have 3/4 of an acre and an ample size house for half of that. Plus, we don't have to live in Utah.

If you want 1/2 acre in Salt Lake or the surrounding "suburbs" you are going to pay about 125k and up. If you are willing to go farther south or north, it's less expensive. In the town we are moving too (Spanish Fork) which is about 40 min south of Salt Lake, you can get a 1/4 acre for 40k, in the little town in the middle of the state my parents live in, you can get a full acre for 20-25k. In most "populated" areas (meaning at least 15k people in the area made up of 4-8 towns) you are going to pay between 20-40k for an acre. If you want a bunch of land that isn't populated, you can get 40 acres for probably just over 100k.

Edit: the average yard size for a new construction 3k square foot house in Salt Lake is probably closer to 1/6 acre, and you need to plan on spending 260-270 minimum.
