For those that don't know, besides being a superstar DJ (okay, just a DJ) I teach fifth grade in St Pete.

For the past 6 weeks I've taken over for our Behavior Specialist who went on maternity leave. Much easier to find a full time sub for a fifth grade class than a B.S.

Long story short, last week a kid SPIT IN MY FACE. Thankfully none got in my mouth or eyes, lil' man ain't the cleanest cat. probably got a mouth like a komodo dragon. mostly landed on my shirt and neck. He was in our "quiet room" and began throwing his shoes against the ceiling trying to knock loose ceiling tiles and when i reached in to take the shoes he got me.

For this, he received a one-day suspension. Otherwise known as a One day vacation.

Your thoughts? What do you think is a good consequence/punishment for something like this? (i've also been swung on several times.. remember, i'm at a K-5 school) What are some of the things you hear about going on at your local schools? cause I could tell you some doozies..

The fact that you were clever enough to use a Komodo Dragon as a comparison slightly elevates you on my respect meter.

Spit on him back? Then he would make the behavioral comparison that "do onto others as you would have them do to you".

I'm not a fan of "suspension". You're right, that is a "vacation" to the kid, and it's PITA for the parents. Because then the parent has to find alternate care for the child during school hours.

It is a parents job to teach their children, but once they are out of a parents sight, they'll pretty much do what they want at that age (getting close to teenager time). So it's really not the parents fault the kid spit on you .. so why punish the parent? Punish the kid.

I think instead of "suspension" they should be sent to "alternative" school for the day. They have a bus that picks them up from regular school and then transport them to the alternative school.

Alternative school is NOT fun at all. Mine had to go a couple years ago, he hasn't been back since.

It is so the parents fault. That child is not receiving discipline at home. The parents should suffer by having to pay for someone to watch their child. Hopefully they'll discipline their child next time.

Saturday detention.

/Breakfast Club

Lock them in a room for 8 hours and put some Celine Dion on loop during the entire time. *shudders*

don't they have in-school suspension there? it's a day spent in school, but seperated from your friends (unless they got in shit too). you have to sit in the library or another room, under supervision, and do homework or extra work all day.

That's not true at all. Mine is highly disciplined at home. He isn't allowed to run amuck. He minds at home, for the most part, every once in a while he'll get a wild hair up his ass and try to buck up. Which results in some sort of punishment .. that we make him pick out of a list (take away his electronics for a week, no tv for a week, ect .. all things he does not enjoy at all).

When kids that age get to school they sometimes turn into different kids, while parents aren't looking. They try to impress their friends, and look "cool" or be "cute" by acting up in class, or towards a teacher.

You can only do so much at home, although a lot of kids aren't disciplined at home .. but you can't just blame it on the parents. Some kids are just hard to handle. Breeding plays a role in this. Mine is fighting that himself. HIs "other half" is not a savory character .. and I can see his personality traits in him sometimes. And he's not even around him, ever.

Watch out Ape will attack you. Especially if you don't spank your dog.

The best thing would have been to laugh and say "Nice one!" Then you say "My turn!" and let him have it with your own huge loogey.
