I was going to guess something like that, a .30-06 isn't bad at all.
I suppose it's fun if you're into that sort of thing, otherwise it'd be good for hunting large, angry mammals.
I typically despise the people that hunt large, angry mammals because they do it only for sport.

But I've seen enough deer shot with 'em on hunting shows that sprint for another few hundred yards to know that I wouldn't bet my whole egg basket on just one.

In self defence (aka shooting humans) you don't shoot for the head. You shoot for center of mass (middle of chest to belly button). Though I always shoot two to the chest, one to the head. Pretty easy with inanimate targets..
You don't shoot a deer in the head.
IIRC the head is the third recommended target.

I think you're right Casper, all the stuff I've seen/read has said to aim for the heart/lungsish area.
In the case of bears, their skull is so freakin' tough that it's a lousy target.
