We made this mistake too for the longest time. The towels would also never full dry which left a mildew stink on them... I was constantly blamed for leaving the towels in the dryer too long UNTIL we figured out that fabric softener does not go on the towels.

Use vinegar.
 
White vinegar is miracle juice. It makes a great fabric softener. Its a great replacement for JetDry in your dishwasher. We also use it to clean the tile floors.
Like unicorn juice, that may almost too much responsibility for me to handle.
 
Ugh, the water in Ohio was horrible. If we didn't put vinegar in with everything we washed there was no cleaning anything. It was disgusting. I can see how some people might decide to clean with it all the time. I can't stand the smell. I'm so glad we don't have hard water here. Baltimore water rocks.
 
Funny thing is, I can't stand the water in Lake Buena Vista. Feels like I have a residue on my afterwards

It's great for the skin and hair too; if there are issues of dryness, itchiness and such its probably time to get a water softener. My hair always feels cleaner too.
